Michigan State football will play its former starting quarterback Aidan Chiles next fall.

Pete Thamel of ESPN reported on Tuesday night that Chiles has committed to Big Ten rival Northwestern. It was reported earlier in the day that Chiles would be visiting Northwestern on Tuesday, and it appears the Wildcats were able to close the commitment of Chiles.

After two seasons at Michigan State, Chiles entered the transfer portal in search of a new home last week. Chiles came to Michigan State from Oregon State with former head coach Jonathan Smith, starting 20 games for the Spartans over the last two seasons. He threw for more than 3,800 yards and 23 touchdowns, and also ran for nearly 500 yards and nine touchdowns while playing for the Spartans.

According to Thamel, Chiles was Northwestern’s “No. 1 target and first quarterback they brought to campus” via the transfer portal.

Michigan State football is set to host Northwestern next season as one of its nine conference games. The date of that matchup between the Spartans and Wildcats is not set yet, but that will be an even bigger game now that Chiles will return to Spartan Stadium on the other sidelines. Ironically, that will also be the first time new Spartans head coach Pat Fitzgerald will face his former team and alma mater as well.
