Caleb Downs believes Ohio state would beat Miami '9 times out of 10'

Ohio State’s football players feel that, given another chance, OSU would fare well against Miami in a Cotton Bowl rematch.

On a Jan. 7 episode of the “Downs 2 Business Podcast,” Ohio State safety Caleb Downs agreed with teammate Caden Curry’s statement that if Ohio State played Miami 10 times, the other nine “would be a different outcome.”

“I truly believe that,” Downs told his brother, Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Josh Downs. “If we would’ve won that game, I definetely think we would’ve won the whole thing. And, yeah, I think we played bad football. We didn’t play good football, like we had been playing the whole season.”

“In the last two games [of the season], we did not execute well enough. If we executed the way that we needed to, we would’ve won that game,” Caleb Downs continued.

Josh Downs was skeptical, pointing to Miami’s defensive line prowess as the X-factor in the victory.

Ohio State defensive back Caleb Downs leaves the field following Buckeyes' 24-14 loss to Miami in the Cotton Bowl at AT&T Stadium.

“It’s hard to say something like that,” he said. “Do you think y’all were a better football team than Miami overall? Yeah, I think that y’all were. … I’m just saying in this situation I don’t know if that is entirely true because of how I think y’all lost that game. … their D-line is crazy.”

Against Miami, Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin was sacked five times, tied with the Big Ten championship game for the most sacks he absorbed all season. In the regular season, the Buckeyes gave up six sacks through 12 games. Sayin also threw a pick-six while the Ohio State offense failed to score in the first half.

No. 2 Ohio State lost 24-14 against the No. 10-ranked Hurricanes, who are moving on to the CFP semifinal to play No. 6 Ole Miss.
