BATON ROUGE – LSU football landed a commitment from South Carolina sophomore transfer defensive end Jaylen Brown Thursday, per multiple reports.
Brown’s announcement marked the second defensive lineman to commit to Lane Kiffin and LSU out of the transfer portal Thursday. Auburn defensive lineman Malik Blocton announced his commitment the Tigers Thursday as well.
Through the first seven days of this portal window, Kiffin and company have added 13 players. To this point only three of those are defensive players, so more work is needed to be done on that side of the ball for LSU.
Brown, a former four-star recruit, signed with Missouri out of high school in 2024, spent one season there before transferring to South Carolina prior to last season. The 6-5, 265-pounder missed the entire 2025 season, recovering from knee surgery he had during the spring due to an injury he suffered in practice.
Why DE Jaylen Brown picked LSU football out of transfer portal
This past season in Columbia, South Carolina, although he wasn’t playing, he learned under the tutelage of Sterling Lucas. Lucas is now LSU’s defensive line coach.
Relationships still matter in college football and it’s highly like that Lucas played a key role in LSU landing Brown out of the portal. The move to Baton Rouge allowed Brown the chance to reunite with his most recent position coach.
How Jaylen Brown will fit LSU football’s roster
What remains to be seen with Brown is where he is at in his rehab process with his knee surgery. How soon will be able to return to action, get on the practice field and how healthy and trusting will he be of his body?
But from a depth perspective, Brown fits in well at LSU as the amount of inexperienced and unproven defensive linemen the team has provides ample questions and plenty of position battles. As long as Brown is healthy, there’ll be opportunity for him to earn significant playing time in LSU’s defensive front.
LSU football transfer targets
- Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt
- Washington quarterback Demond Williams
- Penn State edge rusher Chaz Coleman
- North Carolina State wide receiver Terrell Anderson
- California-Davis running back Carter Vargas
- McNeese State cornerback Javon Davis
When does transfer portal close?
The NCAA transfer portal window closes Jan. 16. Players cannot enter their name in the portal following that date. But those whose name is already in the transfer portal can still decide and sign with a new school after Jan. 16.
