BATON ROUGE — The wait is over.
LSU football and Lane Kiffin have brought in an offensive lineman out of the transfer portal on Day 7 of the portal window.
North Carolina Central’s Ja’Quan Sprinkle became the first offensive lineman to commit to the Tigers on Thursday as groans from the fan base of Kiffin and the coaching staff for not landing any help up front offensively grew louder and louder. Sprinkle announced his commitment on social media.
LSU now has 14 additions out of the transfer portal, including Sprinkle. He’s the first offensive lineman but he is the 10th offensive player out of the portal for the Tigers.
Why Ja’Quan Sprinkle picked LSU football out of transfer portal
Sprinkle is taking a massive step up in competition from playing at NCCU to now LSU. The 6-foot-3, 295-pounder wants to see how he stacks up against the highest level of college football. At North Carolina Central, Sprinkle was an All-MEAC performer.
Of course, the Name, Image and Likeness and revenue sharing is far better at LSU than his previous school, but that’s likely an added bonus as Sprinkle looks to prove his mettle.
How Ja’Quan Sprinkle will fit LSU football’s roster
It’s been mentioned before but LSU desparately needs help along the offensive line. Three of its starting offensive linemen from a year ago are gone while three others that provided depth entered their names into the portal.
Sprinkle played 27 games at NC Central where he mostly played tackle, but he could project to play some interior offensive line at this level. He has two years of eligibility remaining.
LSU football transfer targets
- Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt
- Alabama offensive lineman Micah DeBose
- Washington quarterback Demond Williams
- Penn State edge rusher Chaz Coleman
- North Carolina State wide receiver Terrell Anderson
- California-Davis running back Carter Vargas
- McNeese State cornerback Javon Davis
When does transfer portal close?
The NCAA transfer portal window closes Jan. 16. Players cannot enter their name in the portal following that date. But those whose name is already in the transfer portal can still decide and sign with a new school after Jan. 16.
