AUBURN — Alex Golesh has experienced plenty of Byrum Brown the past three seasons, and he’ll get another year to bask in his longtime quarterback’s glory.
Brown officially moved from Tampa to Auburn football earlier this week, reuniting with Golesh. In the head coach’s Tiger Talk debut, he explained why he thought Brown could have a “generational” impact on the Plains.
“He makes others around him better,” Golesh said Thursday, Jan. 8. “I think the generational guys that I’ve been around, the guys that have changed the trajectory of programs, are guys that make everybody around them be at their level, be at their standard. There’s certainly been a ton of those guys that have come through Auburn. The hope is he’s the next one.”
In working with Golesh the past three seasons at South Florida, Byrum totaled 9,372 yards of offense and was responsible for 84 touchdowns. His final season with the Bulls saw him eclipse 3,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards — a feat only achieved by 11 other FBS quarterbacks in a single season.
“He’s a young man that gains confidence through his preparation, he’s a young guy that’s perfected his process and his day-to-day as he’s been in our program,” Golesh said. “He’s a young man that makes others around him better. I think the biggest compliment you can give Byrum, is these defensive guys that he’s played with on the other side have fed off of him.
“He’s played a ton of football, where when he feels it’s a little bit stale or he feels like the energy isn’t right, he’ll go put his shoulder down on somebody and kind of get everybody going — which we’ve had to kind of simmer down a little bit, or at least pick which shoulder you’re doing it with. Physical, smart, tough, gritty; everything you want in a football player and certainly everything we want here.”
