BATON ROUGE – Make it two in one day.

After Lane Kiffin and his coaching staff had not landed any offensive linemen from the transfer portal in the first six days of the portal being open, the seventh day finally saw the dam break for LSU football. First it was Ja’Quan Sprinkle from North Carolina-Central earlier Thursday then Copiah-Lincoln Community College transfer JaKolby Jones announced his commitment to the Tigers Thursday night.

LSU now has 14 additions from the transfer portal but Kiffin and his offensive staff will look to find a number of more offensive lineman in the portal cycle.

Jones is rated as a top four junior college transfer.

Why JaKolby Jones picked LSU football out of transfer portal

Jones is a Louisiana native from Many so he’s likely always dreamed of playing for LSU. Being offered and getting the chance to play for LSU and Kiffin is probably a dream realized.

For the first time in his collegiate career, Jones will have the opportunity to make some Name, Image and Likeness money.

How JaKolby Jones will fit LSU football’s roster

Another added layer to Jones and his football journey carrying him back home is that LSU is incredibly thin along the offensive line and there is a legit chance for Jones to come in and earning playing time for the Tigers.

He committed to Georgia Tech in the past so he’s been talented enough to play Power Four football. With Kiffin’s overhaul of LSU’s offense continuing, adding a guy like Jones is what he’s looking for to right the ship.

LSU football transfer targets

  • Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt
  • Alabama offensive lineman Micah DeBose
  • Tennessee edge rusher Jordan Ross
  • Penn State edge rusher Chaz Coleman
  • North Carolina State wide receiver Terrell Anderson
  • California-Davis running back Carter Vargas
  • McNeese State cornerback Javon Davis

When does transfer portal close?

The NCAA transfer portal window closes Jan. 16. Players cannot enter their name in the portal following that date. But those whose name is already in the transfer portal can still decide and sign with a new school after Jan. 16.
