MANHATTAN — Kansas State football is trending toward adding another starting-caliber corner as it continues to strengthen its secondary.

Virginia cornerback Ja’son Prevard is expected to commit to the Wildcats, CBS Sports reporter Chris Hummer reported on Jan. 9. The honorable mention All-ACC performer from his past season was on campus earlier this week.

Prevard would become the second corner to sign with the Wildcats during this transfer portal cycle, joining former Illinois starter Kaleb Patterson. K-State is set to return starting corners Zaschon Rich and Donovan McIntosh this past season.

New Kansas State football coach Collin Klein has placed a lot of emphasis on the secondary this offseason, beginning with the hiring of three coaches who specialize in defensive backs: defensive coordinator Jordan Peterson, co-defensive coordinator Marcus Woodson, and defensive backs coach Jeremiah Johnson.

Prevard played 656 snaps for the Cavaliers this past season, playing 406 of them as the team’s slot corner, while lining up 131 times inside the box and four as a wide corner. He’s listed at 6-foot-2, 199 pounds and is coming off his junior season. He played his first two years of college ball at Morgan State.

This past season, he recorded 24 tackles with three interceptions and five pass breakups. He allowed 18 catches on 33 targets, 240 yards and no touchdowns when targeted, intercepting three passes and breaking up two passes.

In his final year of eligibility, Prevard is in a good position to immediately start as a nickel in the Wildcats’ defense. It’s worth noting that Prevard was listed as Virginia’s starter at strong safety in two games late in the season, including in the Cavaliers’ ACC championship loss to Duke.
