Texas Tech football gets Nevada TE Jett Carpenter in transfer portal

Jett Carpenter emerged as a pass catcher this season, his sixth in college football. The Texas Tech football team plans to see how much more he can develop.

The Red Raiders on Friday, Jan. 9, picked up a commitment from Carpenter, a tight end who caught 35 passes for 374 yards and 2 touchdowns in 2025 for Nevada. On3 reported his pledge.

On a team that finished 3-9, Carpenter’s catches and receiving yardage totals were team highs. Nevada listed Carpenter at 6-foot-3 and 258 pounds.

Carpenter is the 14th commitment for the Red Raiders in this cycle of the NCAA transfer portal, which is open for a 15-day period ending on Jan. 16. He played high-school football at North Medford in Medford, Oregon, and spent his first five college years at Eastern Washington in the FCS.

His first college season was the 2020 COVID season, which Eastern Washington played in early 2021. That season didn’t count against athletes’ eligibility. Carpenter then redshirted in 2021 and played in only three games in 2023.

Before this season, his career highs for receiving were 8 catches for 60 yards in 2024.

What Nevada transfer tight end Jett Carpenter brings to Texas Tech football

Nevada's Jett Carpenter is tackled by San Diego State's Dwayne McDougle as he carries the ball for a first down against San Diego State at Mackay Stadium on Saturday Oct. 11, 2025.

Of the six tight ends on Texas Tech’s 2025 roster, top backup Johncarlos Miller completed his eligibility, and redshirt freshman Trey Jackson has his name in the transfer portal.

Carpenter joins a group that includes returning starter Terrance Carter Jr. and Jason Llewellyn, the third tight end each of the past two years. The young up-and-comers in the room are Sean “Rambo” Robinson, a 2025 signee who redshirted this season, and Matt “Moose Ludwig”, a Montana high-school standout the Red Raiders signed in December.

Jack Esparza played in three games this season and has a year of eligibility remaining, but he was among the players who went through the Red Raiders’ senior-day ceremony on Nov. 15.

Carpenter could potentially replace what the Red Raiders got from Miller: someone who played in every game and caught 10 passes in 2024 and nine passes in 2025. Carpenter caught at least two passes in 10 games this season for Nevada and wasn’t shut out in any game.
