Former Purdue football quarterback David Blough’s rapid rise in NFL coaching circles reportedly took another jump Friday.
Per multiple reports, the Washington Commanders promoted Blough to offensive coordinator. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the franchise moved to keep Blough after one of his former teams, the Detroit Lions, showed interest in hiring him as offensive coordinator.
Blough, 30, served as the Commanders‘ assistant quarterbacks coach in each of the past two seasons. Prior to that, he spent five seasons on NFL rosters with the Cleveland Browns, Lions, Minnesota Vikings and Arizona Cardinals.
Blough started five games with the Lions in 2019 and two with the Cardinals in 2022.
The Texas native came to Purdue in 2014. He became a regular starter for the next four seasons under Darrell Hazell and Jeff Brohm. His best season came as a senior, when he threw for 3,521 yards with 25 touchdowns against eight interceptions.
Blough’s coaches and teammates lauded his leadership skills throughout his career. He gave a memorable speech at the Big Ten Kickoff Luncheon in 2017. He was voted a team captain prior to the 2018 season. He was close with Tyler Trent and spoke at the late Purdue student and cancer research advocate’s funeral.
