Since the NCAA transfer portal opened a week ago, Arizona has gone about adding mostly small pieces to its roster. On Saturday, it finally landed a big one.

Former Nebraska safety Malcolm Hartzog Jr. has committed to the Wildcats for 2026. He will have one season of eligibility after spending the last four with the Cornhuskers.

The 5-foot-9, 185-pound Hartzog Jr. started 32 games for Nebraska, logging 1,700 defensive snaps. He has 108 tackles in his career, 4.5 for loss, with 13 pass breakups and eight interceptions.

Hartzog Jr., who had the game-sealing interception in the 2025 opener against Cincinnati, was limited to two games last season after suffering an injury in Week 2.

Arizona has to replace all five starters in the secondary, a group that combined for 108 starts with the Wildcats. The only safeties with starting experience returning for the UA are Gavin Hunter (three) and Coleman Patmon (one), both of whom started the Holiday Bowl.

Hartzog Jr. is Arizona’s 10th addition from the portal, fourth on defense and second in the secondary along with ex-Wyoming cornerback Tyrese Boss.
