Joey Aguilar's waiver 'viewed as unlikely' for additional eligibility

Joey Aguilar completed his first season as Tennessee’s starting quarterback in 2025. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound senior joined Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia’s lawsuit to separate JUCO and NCAA eligibility.

On Sunday, Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports provided an update on Aguilar’s future with Tennessee.

“While a waiver is still being pursued and there’s nothing final yet, it’s currently viewed as unlikely that Tennessee quarterback Joey Aguilar will be granted an additional year of eligibility, sources tell CBS Sports,” Zenitz announced on social media.

Aguilar completed 272-of-404 passing attempts for 3,565 yards, 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 13 games for the Vols in 2025. He also recorded 101 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns.

Aguilar transferred to Tennessee from UCLA after 2025 spring football practices. He never played in a game for the Bruins after transferring to UCLA from Appalachian State following the 2024 campaign.
