Jan. 11—GRAND FORKS — The UND football program has added some speed at wide receiver with its latest addition from the transfer portal.
Washington State wide receiver Cameron Weir has committed to the Fighting Hawks after redshirting as a walk-on in Pullman, Wash., in 2025.
Weir will have familiarity with UND's offense in 2026 as UND is expected to announce Danny Freund as offensive coordinator in the coming days. Freund, a former UND quarterback and long-time assistant, was the offensive coordinator at Washington State in 2025.
Weir was twice named WSU's offensive scout player of the week last season.
"As soon as I figured our head coach (Jimmy Rogers) was going to Iowa State, I decided to enter my name in the portal," Weir said.
Even before Freund became the leading candidate to return to UND, Weir was connected with Hawks' head coach Eric Schmidt through Freund and WSU assistant quarterbacks coach Sam King, a Grand Forks native and former UND wide receivers coach.
"It definitely feels a lot more comfortable," Weir said of transferring to the same place as Freund. "I've been around his offense this season, so it's comfortable knowing what he wants to do and his playbook."
Weir is a Florida native and graduated from high school in Washington. He also took a campus visit to Stephen F. Austin.
"I really liked the (UND) coaching staff but I also really liked the town itself," Weir said. "The coaching staff made me feel like family and my mom was with me, too."
Weir's high school track background is impressive, with a top time of 10.6 seconds in the 100 meters. He won a Washington state championship in the 100 as a junior and took second in the 200.
"I would definitely say speed," Weir said of his strengths. "That helps me a lot. It's easy to go by defenders with my speed. Another thing is my football IQ, and I have a very competitive spirit to m. I don't like to lose.
"I really wanted to get developed and go to a place that wanted to win with a good culture. I just want to play football again."
The Hawks have received 12 commitments this offseason, with Weir becoming the fourth wide receiver from the portal.
Weir joins Winona State's Maurice Densmore, MSU Moorhead's Madden Thorson and Bowling Green's Caleb Goodloe as wide receiver commitments this offseason.
UND's receivers will have a new position coach, too. On Saturday, UND announced former Minnesota wide receiver K.J. Maye will be UND's new wide receivers coach.
