Penn State football 'stars' Luke Reynolds, Andrew Olesh find new homes

Penn State football boasted arguably the top tight end room in the nation last year, at least in regards to promise and potential.

A position group totally reshaped now under new head coach Matt Campbell.

Two of the biggest parts of those lofty expectations last fall − former 5-star recruits Luke Reynolds and Andrew Olesh − have found new homes, via the NCAA transfer portal.

No Nittany Lion position group has seen more upheaval with the Lions losing three of their top four contributors from 2025, including senior starter and dominating blocker Khalil Dinkins to the NFL.

Reynolds, who struggled last fall, announced his transfer on Sunday to Virginia Tech and former PSU head coach James Franklin, according to national reports, like ESPN. Despite inconsistency, Reynolds was still fourth on the Lions’ with 26 receptions for 257 yards last fall.

The former high school quarterback was the No. 2-rated tight end in the transfer portal, according to ESPN. He’ll also reunite with his former tight end coach, Ty Howle, in Virginia Tech.

Reynolds finished his Penn State career with two catches for 28 yards in the Pinstripe Bowl victory over Clemson.

Olesh, who redshirted and did not play last fall, announced he would be joining Big Ten rival Oregon. He was arguably the top tight end recruit in the nation out of Southern Lehigh in December of 2024 when he flipped his verbal commitment from Michigan to Penn State.

Olesh practiced and waited last fall behind Dinkins, Reynolds and redshirt sophomore Andrew Rappleyea, who rose up to the No. 1 pass-catching tight end by season’s end.

Rappleyea should be a focal point of Campbell’s expected heavy tight end usage next season − combining with three Iowa State transfers in All-Big 12 Ben Brahmer, senior Gabe Burkle and rising sophomore Cooper Alexander.

All three Iowa State tight ends contributed last season with Burkle (26 receptions despite injury issues) and Brahmer (37 receptions). Brahmer is 6-fot-7 and Burkle is 6-foot-6.
