Former UCF football coach Gus Malzahn is joining the College Football Playoff selection committee.

The 60-year-old Malzahn recently retired from coaching after spending last season as the offensive coordinator at Florida State. He was the Knights’ coach for four seasons from 2021-24, posting a 28-24 overall record.

He’s one of three new faces joining the 13-member selection committee, along with Louisiana athletics director Dr. Bryan Maggard and former Cal and Fresno State coach Jeff Tedford.

The new members will begin serving three-year terms this spring, replacing Chris Ault, Jeff Long and David Sayler.

“It’s an honor to be a part of the @CFBPlayoff committee,” Malzahn shared on social media Monday.

“The additions of Bryan Maggard, Gus Malzahn and Jeff Tedford will introduce strong, fresh perspectives to the selection committee as we enter our 13th season,” Playoff executive director Rob Clark said in a statement. “Each brings a deep understanding of the game, a genuine passion for college football and a commitment to integrity and excellence. Their diverse backgrounds as university leaders, recent coaches and former student-athletes will complement our returning members and allow for a seamless transition.”

Malzahn spent 13 seasons as a collegiate head coach, first at Arkansas State (2013), then at Auburn (2013-20), and finally at UCF (2021-24). He was an assistant coach at Arkansas, Tulsa and for Auburn’s 2010 national champions.

He began his coaching career at the high school level in Arkansas.

Maggard has spent the past decade serving as AD at Louisiana and previously worked at Missouri, Kansas State and Florida State.

Tedford was at Cal from 2002-12 and has twice served as Fresno State’s head coach (2017-19, 2022-23). He’s also worked at Oregon, Washington and for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The selection committee determines the playoff rankings for the 25 teams, assigning the top 12 teams spots in the playoff bracket.
