John Mateer is the quarterback of the present, but Oklahoma fans are hoping that Bowe Bentley is the quarterback of the future.
The rising freshman is in Norman preparing for spring ball ahead of his first collegiate season. He spoke earlier this week about the reasons he chose Oklahoma despite his high-school football in Celina, Texas.
"I think the history speaks for itself. It's definitely Quarterback U," Bentley said.
He's not wrong. In the last 25 years alone the Sooners have rostered national champion Josh Heupel, three Heisman Trophy winners in Jason White, Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray, plus stars like Sam Bradford, Landry Jones, Jalen Hurts, Caleb Williams and Dillon Gabriel.
Bentley clearly understood he wasn't going to Oklahoma to start as a freshman. Mateer was the favorite for the Heisman himself after Week 2. And though a thumb injury slowed him in the final two-thirds of the season, Mateer is highly rated on preseason watch lists for the trophy again this year.
Coach Brent Venables led the Sooners to their first College Football Playoff since the field expanded this past season. OU is expected to compete for a similar spot, and maybe even grander things, in 2026. That's something Bentley appreciates.
"I just think the coaches are next level," Bentley said. "I think coach Venables and the program he runs, I love it. It's something I'm used to and it standed (sic) out from everybody else."
Oklahoma's spring football season begins March 25 and the first game of the season is set for Sept. 5 at home against Texas-El Paso.
