10-Loss ACC Program Linked to Division II Standout Quarterback

Saginaw Valley State standout quarterback Mason McKenzie is “likely” to visit Bill O’Brien and the Boston College Eagles after recently earning a scholarship offer, according to 247Sports.

Boston College offered McKenzie, the 2025 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year, on Friday. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound McKenzie earned a three-star transfer rating from 247Sports. The outlet also gave McKenzie a three-star rating as a high school prospect from Caledonia, Mich.

247Sports’ Allen Trieu reported that McKenzie has also drawn interest from Cincinnati, Nebraska and Northwestern, among other Power 4 programs.

McKenzie completed 59.8% of his passes for 2,086 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions over 11 games. The redshirt sophomore also rushed for a team-high 942 yards and 10 touchdowns.

What to Know About Saginaw Valley State Quarterback Mason McKenzie

For his career, McKenzie owns a 58.2% completion percentage, 4,301 passing yards, and a 31-17 TD-INT ratio. He has developed into a prolific dual-threat option, picking up 1,673 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns on 5.7 yards per carry.

McKenzie would be a welcome addition to a Boston College team that finished 2-10, its first 10-loss season since 2012. The Eagles averaged 25.4 points and were outscored 393-305.

Dylan Lonergan, who started nine games at quarterback, is entering his redshirt junior season. Lonergan, an Alabama transfer, recorded a 66.9% completion percentage, 2,025 passing yards, and a 12-5 TD-INT ratio.

Boston College opted to retain O’Brien, with athletic director Blake James announcing that the school will change its financial commitment, including increasing its revenue sharing moving forward.

“Like many, I believe Coach O’Brien is the right man to be our head coach,” James wrote in an open letter to fans on Dec. 2.

Boston College signed 23 players during the early signing period, led by four-star edge rushers Mason Leak (Avon, Conn.) and Demeterius Thompson (Clayton, Mo.). 247Sports ranks the Eagles’ class No. 48 nationally and 13th among ACC programs.
