2025 Cotton Bowl Prediction: Ohio State vs Miami CFP Quarterfinal

For anyone of a certain age, the idea of Ohio State and Miami playing in a bowl as big as the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic immediately brings back memories of one of the greatest games in the history of college football.

The two programs played after the epic 2023 Fiesta Bowl – a very controversial 31-24 Ohio State win that kept Miami from winning a second straight national title.

Now it’s Miami’s turn to stop the Buckeyes from making it two in a row.

How Ohio State and Miami Match Up in the Cotton Bowl Quarterfinal

Ohio State has a few question marks.

Yes, it got the job done against Michigan, but this Wolverine team wasn’t anything truly special. Yes, it beat Texas to start the regular season, but it also failed against Indiana in the Big Ten Championship to end it.

Can the offense crank it up? Can the team find the same fire it had in last year’s run to the national title?

Miami pitched a gem in the Playoff First Round win over Texas A&M.

It was brutal with the running game, nasty with the defense, and it came away with a thriller of a 10-3 win in the most hostile environment anyone will face in this year’s CFP.

Oh yeah, it’s battle-tested now, and it also proved that it has the talent to take down anyone in this tournament and win it all.

It’s the Cotton Bowl on New Year’s Eve, and it kicks off one of the best two days of college football we’ve seen in a long, long time.

Why Miami Will Win

The NFL talent was on display in College Station. Even more impressively, that was the Miami offensive line.

Overall, Miami looked fresh. It looked and played like a team that had its legs back, and the front five played like it was unwrapped right out of the box.

Pass protection was a strong suit for the Hurricanes all year long, but the ground game wasn’t anything special. It averaged about 150 yards per game, and it had a few big moments against the mediocre – like Bethune Cookman and USF – but this was different.

Texas A&M was No. 2 in the nation in sacks, No. 2 in tackles for loss, and the run defense was a rock for most of the season.

The Miami offensive front allowed two sacks, just six tackles for loss, and on the flip side, the Texas A&M offensive line, which was No. 1 in America in fewest tackles for loss allowed, gave up nine – it gave up fewer than three per game this season – and seven sacks against the NFL-caliber playmakers on the Miami D line.

Yeah, Texas A&M had a shot late to tie it up, and maybe win it, but Miami bullied its way all day long. Quarterback Carson Beck never once had to force anything that wasn’t there, and the ultra-conservative game plan worked because when it was winning time, the Mark Fletcher and the ground game rumbled behind that offensive front.

Ohio State hasn’t faced anything like this all season long.

Indiana’s run defense is amazing, but that’s more about technique, schemes, and doing absolutely everything right with zero mistakes. Michigan has a killer offensive front and great run D, but again, nothing like Miami can bring.

The Hurricanes showed a combination of smarts, discipline, and talent against Texas A&M. In other words, everything is there to take down a team as talented as Ohio State. However ….

Why Ohio State Will Win

Texas A&M played along with what Miami wanted to do. Ohio State can’t let that happen.

Miami is very, very, very talented, but no one in America has the playmakers the Buckeyes have, and it’s time to let them play.

Of course the Buckeyes wanted to win the Big Ten Championship. But to know this bunch, the Michigan game meant even more, and beating Indiana, while it would’ve been fine, wasn’t the goal. And in the end, Ohio State won by losing to IU – it got the lower-seeded team.

The Indiana game was almost like Ohio State didn’t want to show anyone anything it was about to bring to the big tournament.

Everyone knows the offense can explode, and the defense is next-level dominant, but the coaching staff played it ultra-conservative, assuming the D would hold and the O would rise up when it had to – and lost.

Be floored if you don’t see an Ohio State team that looks and plays like it’s finally ready to kick it into fourth gear.

There are two sides to the way the Miami-Texas A&M and Ohio State-Indiana games went down. Either you think you have the better defense, and you make sure the offense doesn’t screw it up, you win the field position battle, and you go home happy.

However, again, that got Ohio State beat, and Miami almost got Iowaed and let Texas A&M stay alive long enough to pull it out.

Or, you know you have a great defense, it’s good enough to get you out of most jams, so let it rip, and if something bad happens, you deal with it, minimize the damage, and let it rip again.

Miami is better on the lines than it is at the skill parts, and Ohio State has the big advantage when it comes to the star power playmakers. And …

Ohio State vs Miami Prediction, Betting Lines

This might be hyperbolic, and I totally guarantee I’ll use this same line in the next round with the team that wins this, but this might just be the national championship. That’s how good the lines and the two defenses are.

Carson Beck has NFL talent and upside. There was a time not all that long ago when he was considered a possible No. 1 overall pick. However, Miami got away with not forcing him to do anything big.

Texas A&M had the No. 1 third down defense in the country, and Miami wasn’t even close to cracking it, going 3-of-12 with the running game mostly taking care of the short plays.

Ohio State is No. 2 in the nation in third down defense. Miami has to open it up, and it has to do it against the best secondary and pass defense in college football.

Miami will win more than its share of battles. The pass rush will get to Julian Sayin enough to matter, but the Ohio State receivers will take over when they have to.
