The Big 12 finally has an alpha, and it earned the crown. Joey McGuire didn't just win Texas Tech's first ever conference title last year, he dragged the Red Raiders to the school's first College Football Playoff berth, and 2026 opens with them as the clear favorite. We grade this roster No. 1 in the Big 12 on defense and No. 2 on offense. The coronation is real.
Behind them, it's a circus — and I mean that as a compliment.
This is the most new-coach-riddled league in the country. Collin Klein takes over at Kansas State, Jimmy Rogers at Iowa State, Eric Morris at Oklahoma State and Morgan Scalley at Utah. New coach, new system, new quarterback, over and over. These unknown variables help to open opinions in the market.

Who wins the Big 12?
Texas Tech is even money to win the Big 12, and for once I'm not fighting the chalk. Our projection has them at 10.6 wins, roughly two clear of the next team on the board (Utah at 8.6). In a league this flat behind the top team, a genuine juggernaut at even money is the rare favorite I'd actually leave alone.
The value, as always in this conference, lives in the win totals, where the new-coach transition tax and a couple of hype-inflated numbers hand us clean edges in both directions. Two of them I like enough to bet, and they're both overs.

Utah over 8.5 wins (-135)
Kyle Whittingham has left for Michigan, so longtime coordinator Morgan Scalley takes over a team he's basically been running for years. The identity doesn't change.
We grade this offense tops in the Big 12, and Devon Dampier is back after a 2,490-yard passing, 835-yard rushing season, now paired with new coordinator Kevin McGiven and the WR1 (Braden Pegan) he brought over from Utah State. Our number sits right on the line at 8.6, so the projection is neutral. If I had a lean, this would be it.
I'm a big believer in momentum inside a college kid's head, especially under a new staff, and Utah gets eight games off the rip that carry high win probability. If this team walks into November at 7-1 or 8-0, that confidence compounds. Yes, the finish is a gauntlet with BYU, Arizona and TCU, but momentum is one hell of a drug. Give me the over.
TCU over 6.5 wins (-145)
Sonny Dykes is now in Year Five, and after two straight nine-win seasons he tore the offense down to the studs. New coordinator, new quarterback and a rebuilt line. Normally that scares me. It doesn't here, because of who is taking the snaps.
Transfer Jaden Craig is a two-time All-Ivy performer who threw 48 touchdowns to 10 picks over the last two years at Harvard. He's experienced and he doesn't turn the ball over, which is exactly the steady hand a new scheme needs while the pieces jell. The schedule helps, too.
That opener against North Carolina got a lot more winnable with how the wheels are coming off in Chapel Hill, and I count six gettable home games on this slate. My one real worry is the toss-ups being on the road — at UCF, Baylor and Arizona. With a proven, turnover-free quarterback and top-half units on both sides sitting behind a soft 6.5 total, though, I see real upside for this new offense. Give me the over.
