The Miami Hurricanes begin the 2026 season with a trip to the Bay Area to face the Stanford Cardinal.

The game will be played on Friday, September 4th at 9pm Eastern (6pm Pacific) to kick off Labor Day weekend.

While this is Miami’s season opener, this will be Stanford’s second game of the year. They have a Week 0 matchup against Hawaii to start their season.

These are teams on different trajectories, with Miami pushing for an ACC and National Championship, and Stanford looking to rebuild the foundation for a successful program.

We know the recent resumes of these teams: Miami won a program-record 13 games, including 3 CFP victories last year en route to a berth in the National Championship game. Meanwhile, Stanford had an interim coach for a year, and struggled to a 4-8 record.

Miami and Stanford met last year, with the Canes cruising to a 42-7 victory over the Cardinal. That was the first-ever meeting between these new conference foes.

Stanford Cardinal Offense

I’ll keep this quick: Stanford was one of the worst offenses in America last year. They were 125th in yards per game, 128th in Yards Per Play, 127th in total offensive yards, 133rd in rushing yards, and the list goes on. Those numbers are a big reason why they went 4-8.

Now, after a year of searching for a full time coach, former Stanford QB Tavita Pritchard returns to Palo Alto to lead the Cardinal into the future. For the X’s and O’s, check out this installment of Summer Scheming.

Redshirt Senior QB Davis Warren is the likely starter for the Cardinal. He is a veteran player who signed with Michigan back in 2020. He’s appeared in 17 games across 3 years in Ann Arbor. In his most extensive action, Warren threw for 1,200 yards on 64% completions with 7 TDs and 9 INTs in 9 games in 2024. Warren did not appear in a game last year.

Apart from that, Stanford has been known for their OL and TE recruiting and development. Those positions will be key to any success Stanford finds on offense this year.

Transfers Carter Shaw and Nico Brown join JonAnthony Hall as the probable top targets in Stanford’s passing game. And, they have a few RBs with talent, including South Florida native Sedrick Irvin.

After being one of the worst offenses in the country last year, Stanford will hope to take a step forward this year. Even if they do, Miami’s defense should be able to handle this challenge.

Stanford Cardinal Defense

Like their offense, Stanford’s defense struggled in 2025. 105th in yard per game allowed. 102nd in yards per play allowed (65.93). 96th in points allowed per game (29.2). 82nd in total points allowed (350). 136th (out of 136) — AKA DEAD LAST IN THE COUNTRY — in passing yards per game allowed (288.9). Opponents had a 22 to 3 TD/INT ratio. And the list goes on and on.

Stanford is at the beginning of a full scale rebuild, and they hope to continue the (minor) improvement they saw in some areas on defense last year, and find success where they haven’t in several years — particularly in pass defense, where they’ve been one of the worst teams in the country, including the singular worst last year.

Honestly. There’s not much more to say. Stanford will look to bring physicality to the field, which has always been their calling card when they’re competitive. But, even with a MASSIVE step forward, this is an obstacle that Miami should be able to handle with relative ease.

Early Prediction

I’ll keep this short: I fully expect Miami to win this game by 3 TDs or more. Stanford simply doesn’t have the athletes to compete, and they are at the beginning of a big rebuild/reconstruction. I know that things can change in a hurry with the transfer portal and whatnot, but these teams are in very, VERY different stratospheres, and that should bear itself out to be true in this year’s season opener.

For Miami, with designs on the ACC Championship game and well beyond, easily dispatching the likes of Stanford is a necessity. This opponent is among the worst the Hurricanes will face in 2026, and beating them easily and soundly is a necessity.

On to the next one.
