Texas A&M’s 2027 recruiting class features what many consider to be the program’s next star signal caller, as four-star quarterback Jayce Johnson was the program’s first commit in the cycle. Even with offensive coordinator Collin Klein leaving to become Kansas State’s head coach, Johnson reportedly remains locked in with the Aggies, primarily because of the program’s culture shift under head coach Mike Elko.
After signing his six-year extension, Mike Elko, like a corporate CEO, is looking towards the future, knowing that the program’s current starting quarterback, Marcel Reed, will more than likely depart for the NFL if he matches or improves upon his 2025 season, which included 25 touchdown passes. Next season, barring any transfer portal movement, Reed’s primary backup will be freshman Helaman Casuga or redshirt sophomore Myles O’Neill.
Looking past the 2026 season, Jayce Johnson becomes an intriguing name that is certainly talented enough to make some noise as soon as he makes his way to College Station, while his 2026 senior season at Lowndes HS will further determine his readiness to play at the next level. A little less than a year from now, Johnson is expected to sign his letter of intent with Texas A&M, securing his future with the program.
After passing for 1,182 yards, 11 touchdowns, and four interceptions, paired with 658 yards and 14 rushing scores, Johnson spoke with The Football Network, providing a brief quote regarding his reasoning for choosing the Aggies over several other SEC programs:
“Texas A&M stood out because they saw me as more than just another recruit they saw a leader they could build with. The culture the coaching staff and the vision matched everything I’m about.”
Throughout Mike Elko’s career as a recruiter, it’s never been about each prospect’s ranking or their national perception, but what Elko sees as being a fit both from a leadership standpoint and scheme fit, which has consistently led to undervalued prospects, including unanimous All-American edge Cashius Howell, reaching their potential.
According to 247Sports, Jayce Johnson is currently positioned as the 65th-ranked prospect, the 7th-ranked quarterback, and the 7th-ranked prospect in Georgia.
