On Wednesday, On3’s Pete Nakos published an article detailing the college football programs that have spent the most NIL funds in the 2027 recruiting class, with Texas A&M coming in as the biggest spender with a reported $10 million among the program’s 25 commits in the No. 1-ranked 2027 recruiting cycle. Leading the way with six five-star commitments, the Aggies’ top-ranked commit is reportedly the highest-paid recruit.
According to Nakos, five-star offensive lineman Mark Matthews, ranked as the No. 1 tackle in the 2027 class, will reportedly make a whopping $1 million during his three to four-year career in College Station, similar to some of the top-ranked quarterbacks in the country, such as Texas signal-caller Arch Manning.
Matthews, who is essentially a lock to start at left tackle during his first or second season, especially given the likely O-line departures after the 2026 season, already looks like a future first or second round NFL Draft selection, especially as a pass protector. Winning in the trenches is vital to having any success, which, in today’s NIL-driven landscape, garners a hefty price tag.
“Texas A&M landed five-star offensive tackle Mark Matthews for a deal over $1 million, beating out Miami. Multiple sources said the 6-foot-5, 285-pound Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas prospect turned down a bigger offer from the Hurricanes to select the Aggies.”
Beating out Miami for Matthews wasn’t just about the money, as the blue-chip OL shouted “Elko era!” after his commitment, and has continued to help recruit other players based on his firm belief that Mike Elko is building one of the top college football programs in the country.
Texas A&M also landed commitments from five-star IOL Kennedy Brown and four-star tackles DeMarrion Johnson and Kaeden Scott. Other names on the list of the highest paid 2027 recruits include five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson, who committed to South Carolina over Texas A&M, Michigan, and Auburn on Wednesday.
