The Utah Utes have an explosive weapon as part of the 2027 recruiting class with wide receiver Darnell Jackson Jr.
For Jackson, his decision to commit to Utah came down to the culture and the relationships he built with Morgan Scalley and the rest of Utah’s staff.
“It was the moment we had the luau when I realized this was home for me,” Jackson told me about his official visit. “It felt like a family.”
That has been a big theme for the Utes with this recruiting class.
Recruits are not just hearing the staff talk about the family environment inside the program. They are getting around the coaches, players and their families and seeing it for themselves.
“The Utes’ culture is like no other, from the coaches down to Salt Lake City itself,” Jackson said. “How the coaches interact with one another and how loyal they are to the program and the vision they have, it just didn’t compare to anywhere else.”
That loyalty stood out to Jackson.
Utah has a coaching staff filled with people who have spent a major part of their careers inside the program, and Scalley is at the center of that.
“Coach Scalley is a one-of-a-kind coach,” Jackson said. “Knowing he has been there for 20-plus years and now is there as head coach tells me he is dedicated to the program and has faith in the direction Utah is heading right now.”
Scalley is not trying to completely change what Utah has been. He has been part of building the program for more than two decades, and now he gets the opportunity to lead it in his own direction.
Jackson believes in that vision.
The relationships with wide receivers coach Chad Bumphis, cornerbacks coach Sharrieff Shah and Scalley were also major reasons behind his decision.
“Coach Bumphis, Coach Shah and Coach Scalley made me feel like I was already on the team,” Jackson said. “I mean, all the coaches interacted with me. With all the laughs, the hospitality and even the honesty and genuineness, it’s just everything a player can ask for in coaches.”
That is what Utah did well in this recruitment.
Bumphis also gives Jackson a coach he believes can help develop his game and find ways to use his speed in Utah’s offense.
That speed is what Jackson wants Utah fans to be excited about.
“Y’all buckle up because when it’s game time, it’s showtime,” Jackson said. “Watch the speed take the field.”
Jackson found what he was looking for in Salt Lake City.
The culture felt different. The relationships with the coaches felt genuine. He believes in Scalley and the direction of the program. And by the time the luau came around during his official visit, Jackson knew Utah was home.
