2028 5-star commit looks like Texas A&M's 'QB1 of the future'

Texas A&M's current quarterback situation is solid, as redshirt junior Marcel Reed returns for his second full starting season, while redshirt freshman Brady Hart is on track to be Reed's primary backup based on the intel we received this preseason. Coupled with freshman Helaman Casuga, it's hard to tell if either player has what it takes to take over as the starter once Marcel Reed eventually departs.
However, in the No. 1-ranked 2027 recruiting class, four-star commit Jayce Johnson should also be a part of the conversation, and on Saturday, the Aggies landed their second commitment in the 2028 cycle, as five-star quarterback Donald Tabron II chose A&M over LSU and Oregon, bringing an NFL-level skill set that provides coach Mike Elko and OC Holman Wiggins plenty to work with in the near future.
After discussing his decision with 247Sports insider Tom Loy, Tabron also sat down with ESPN for a similar interview, further crediting Holmon Wiggins and QB coach Joey Lynch, who have constantly communicated with the blue-chip signal-caller throughout this recruitment, which will continue heading into the 2026 season.
"As soon as [Wiggins and Lynch] got their jobs in January, they've been in communication with me ever since," Tabron said. "It's been consistent from then to now. And then I've been there three times this year. Being able to see it in person, going for a game last year and just being able to build a really good relationship with them made the difference."
During his 2025 sophomore season at Cass Technical, Tabron threw for an impressive 2,819 yards and 35 touchdowns, leading his squad to the Michigan Division I state title game. Already possessing elite accuracy and touch, Tabron's passing mechanics will never be an issue during the early parts of his career in College Station.
Tabron continued to reference A&M's No. 1-ranked 2027 recruiting class in both interviews, especially five-star offensive tackle Mark Matthews, whose "Elko Era!" chant has been the calling card for nearly every commitment since his announcement, including Tabron.
The culture Mike Elko is building in College Station was evident after the team made the College Football Playoff and sent a record 10 players to the 2026 NFL Draft.
