2028 blue-chip offensive tackle Maui Tonata schedules official visit at BYU

The BYU Cougars will have one the best players in Beehive State on hand for two marquee games this year.
Orem (Utah) five-star offensive tackle Maui Tonata announced his five official visits this week. The No. 2 offensive tackle and No. 16 player overall in the 2028 class will be in Provo on Oct. 17 when BYU hosts Notre Dame. He'll also be in Salt Lake City on Nov. 7 when BYU faces Utah for the Holy War.
Tonata has also scheduled recruiting visits to Texas A&M (Sept. 19), Alabama (Oct. 10) and USC (Oct. 31). Given the fact he'll see BYU twice in the span of three weeks is one interesting detail. He'll be on the Utes sideline for the Holy War, but Kalani Sitake and his staff will present a good case from afar.
At 6-foot-5 and 320 pounds, Tonata is one of the best in the country in size and strength. There's a clear reason why he's ready for the next level. On tape, he's a beast with great footwork and is advanced as a high school junior. With a little bit of advanced coaching, Tonata will be an NFL-ready worker in the trenches in the coming years.
"I’ve been to BYU and Utah multiple times," he told Rivals' Greg Biggins. "I know the coaches really well and I’m looking forward to seeing them both in action. The Holy War is a chance to see them both so that should be great."
BYU enters one of the biggest seasons in recent memory. The matchup with Notre Dame will be a good test to see how the Cougars stack up against one of the best programs in the College Football Playoff picture. Sitake is preparing his team for a deep postseason run, which is something that has eluded them each of the past two seasons.
Could this year for BYU get over the hump and move towards being a national championship contender? Many believe the Cougars will be one of the teams to watch. They'll likely have to get past Texas Tech after failing to do so twice during the course of last year.
We'll learn many things after BYU hosts the Irish in the midseason affair. Tonata will be there to witness two of the biggest games this college football season. BYU has a great shot at landing the blue-chip regardless of the outcome on the field. His scheduled visits put him on the sidelines for some interesting matchups.
At the end of the day, is staying home more important than trying to be in the SEC or Southern California? That's the question Tonata needs to ask himself.
