3 Biggest Storylines to Watch as Northwestern Faces Michigan State

Northwestern football is heading into one of its most intriguing matchups of the 2026 season.

The No. 25 Wildcats enter Saturday’s Big Ten showdown against Michigan State with a 4-1 record, coming off a dominant 45-14 victory over Ball State. Meanwhile, the Spartans sit at 2-4 after suffering a heartbreaking 38-37 overtime loss to Illinois.

But this matchup is about much more than the records.

From a quarterback returning to face his former team to two coaches with deep connections to Northwestern, Saturday’s game is filled with interesting storylines.

And for a Wildcats team that has enjoyed plenty of success at home, this will also be another opportunity to prove it can handle a difficult road environment.

Here are three of the biggest storylines to watch when Northwestern travels to East Lansing.

1. Aidan Chiles Returns to Michigan State

There might not be a more interesting individual storyline heading into Saturday than Aidan Chiles returning to face his former team.

Before arriving at Northwestern, Chiles spent two seasons at Michigan State, where he appeared in 21 games and made 20 starts.

During his time with the Spartans, Chiles threw for 3,807 yards and 23 touchdowns, showing flashes of the dual-threat ability that made him such an intriguing quarterback prospect.

However, consistency was an issue at times, and his tenure in East Lansing did not quite unfold as many had hoped.

Now, Chiles will return to Spartan Stadium wearing a Northwestern uniform, and he is playing some of the best football of his college career.

Through five games, Chiles has thrown for 1,172 yards and nine touchdowns without an interception. He has also added six rushing touchdowns, giving him 15 total touchdowns on the season.

His development under offensive coordinator Chip Kelly has been one of the biggest reasons behind Northwestern’s impressive start.

Chiles has become more efficient, more comfortable in the pocket and more effective at making plays with both his arm and his legs.

And now he gets an opportunity to showcase that improvement against the program he previously represented.

There will undoubtedly be emotions surrounding his return, but Chiles has an opportunity to let his performance speak for itself.

With Northwestern looking to improve to 5-1, all eyes will be on how its quarterback handles the moment.

2. David Braun vs. Pat Fitzgerald: A Familiar Coaching Battle

Saturday’s matchup will also feature one of the most interesting coaching reunions in college football.

On one sideline will be Northwestern head coach David Braun. On the other will be Pat Fitzgerald, the man who spent 17 seasons leading the Wildcats before taking over Michigan State’s program.

Fitzgerald is one of the most recognizable figures in Northwestern football history.

He played linebacker for the Wildcats during their memorable 1990s success before eventually becoming the program’s head coach in 2006.

Over 17 seasons, Fitzgerald became Northwestern’s winningest head coach, leading the program to multiple bowl victories and Big Ten West division titles.

Following Fitzgerald’s departure in 2023, Braun took over the program after initially being hired as Northwestern’s defensive coordinator.

And the connection between the two coaches makes Saturday’s matchup particularly interesting.

Despite everything surrounding the reunion, both coaches have made it clear that they have plenty of respect for one another.

For Braun, the focus remains on preparing Northwestern to perform at its best.

The two coaches know one another, understand the importance of this matchup and will certainly want to come away with a victory.

But once the game begins, the focus will shift from their shared history to the battle on the field.

Braun has Northwestern ranked in the Top 25, while Fitzgerald is attempting to rebuild a Michigan State program that is still searching for its first conference victory of the season.

It should be fascinating to see which coach has his team better prepared when the Wildcats and Spartans take the field.

3. Can Northwestern Prove It Can Win on the Road?

This might not be the flashiest storyline, but it could be one of the most important.

Northwestern has been impressive through its first five games, winning four contests and earning a spot in the AP Top 25.

However, all four victories have come at home.

The Wildcats have played just one road game this season, a 29-23 loss against Indiana.

And while Indiana is one of the toughest opponents on Northwestern’s schedule, that game also demonstrated how challenging a hostile road environment can be.

The Wildcats struggled to find their rhythm early, falling behind 12-0 at halftime before putting together an impressive second-half comeback.

Northwestern ultimately came up short, but the performance showed both the team’s ability to respond and the importance of getting off to a better start away from home.

Now, the Wildcats face another difficult road test.

Michigan State might enter Saturday with a 2-4 record, but Spartan Stadium is not an easy place to play, especially with a fan base eager to see its team turn the season around.

Michigan State is also encouraging fans to wear white for Saturday’s matchup, creating the possibility of an especially energetic atmosphere.

For Northwestern’s offense, communication will be critical.

Chiles and the offensive line will need to handle crowd noise, avoid unnecessary penalties and make sure everyone is on the same page before the snap.

That is particularly important in Kelly’s offense, which relies on timing, execution and getting playmakers into favorable situations.

The Wildcats cannot afford to let a slow start or early mistakes put them in another difficult position.

Michigan State is coming off a competitive overtime loss against Illinois, proving that the Spartans are capable of challenging Big Ten opponents despite their record.

Northwestern has already shown it can win convincingly at home.

Now comes an opportunity to demonstrate that the same success can translate to a difficult road environment.

And if the Wildcats can handle the atmosphere, execute offensively and remain disciplined, they will put themselves in a strong position to earn their first road victory of the season.

Saturday’s matchup offers Northwestern a chance to continue its impressive start, but it also presents three intriguing tests.

Can Chiles deliver against his former team? Will Braun get the better of Fitzgerald in their first head-to-head matchup? And can Northwestern finally earn a victory away from Evanston?

Those questions make Saturday’s Big Ten showdown one of the most interesting games on Northwestern’s schedule.
