3 positions of need remaining for Michigan Football’s 2027 recruiting class

The Michigan Wolverines have a solid 2027 recruiting class assembled up to this point in the year. Depending on where you look, Kyle Whittingham and company have a borderline Top 10 overall class, and there are still players left for the taking.

While spots are filling up, there are still a few positions of need for Michigan before the December early signing period. Here are the top three needs.

Wide receiver

Four-star Quentin Burrell is the only wide receiver committed to Michigan’s 2027 class. The Wolverines were able to get three wide receivers last cycle, but there’s no denying they could use at least one more — but preferably two — wide receivers before it’s all said and done.

Interior defensive line

Both Trey Pierce and Enow Etta could head to the NFL after this season, and there are plenty of unproven commodities waiting in the wings. Michigan’s 2027 class is strong with edge rushers, but outside of four-star Xavier Muhammad, there is a pretty sizable gap on the defensive front.

A true nose tackle would help beef up the class and combat some of those strong, Big Ten interior offensive linemen down the road. Adding some bulk would, in theory, open up pass rushing opportunities for the edge rushers that Michigan already has committed, and continue the Wolverines’ tradition of powerful, tenacious defensive lines.

Safety

Michigan’s 2027 class is loaded in the secondary with guys like four-star Monsanna Torbert, four-star Blake Jenkins and four-star Darius Johnson all have starter ceilings. Four-star safety/nickel Tavares Harrington and three-star safety Charles Woodson Jr. make this probably the biggest strength of the 2027 bunch.

But the current starting five are all older, as Zeke Berry and Rod Moore are redshirt seniors, Smith Snowden is a true senior, and both Jyaire Hill and Chris Brady are redshirt juniors. Between sophomore Shamari Earls, junior Mason Curtis and freshman Jamarion Vincent, there is still talent in the pipeline. Yet, there will be heavy turnover in the coming year or so, and replenishing that back five should be among the staff’s checklist.
