In the 2028 recruiting class, it's safe to say that while it has talent, it certainly does not have depth. Only three players have committed to the Nittany Lions in the class, including four-star quarterback prospect James Armstrong and four-star corner Deonte Flemings Jr. However, Flemings is not fully on board just yet, with schools such as Nebraska and Ole Miss looking to flip him away from the Nittany Lions. The Blue and White have already lost a lot of talent to flips, and must ensure that will not become a problem further down the road. That is why their Week 1 game against Marshall is not only critical on the field, but off it as well.

Nasir Richardson is the No. 1 corner in the class and the 12th overall prospect according to 247Sports. It would be a huge Northeast win for the Nittany Lions if Penn State can secure the commitment from the New Jersey native. Most importantly, it could help compensate for the potential loss of Flemings or convince him that both he and Richardson can become one of the best Big Ten CB duos of the future.

Richardson is familiar with Happy Valley, having visited three prior times, including when James Franklin was still head coach. This is significant as Penn State is already his most visited school, despite him living only 20 miles away from Rutgers.

The fact that players like Richardson are willing to travel and invest their time in visits is also testament to Campbell retaining Terry Smith as the cornerbacks coach. Throughout his career, he has always played an integral role in recruiting elite secondary talent, and the 2028 cycle has proved to be no different. By being able to diagnose talent willing to play in Happy Valley shows that Penn State will continue to be competitive on the recruiting trail.

It remains to be seen what will happen with Flemings and whether or not he will decide to leave. Still, if they are either able to keep Fleming and land Richardson, or do a swap, the Nittany Lions would still stand to benefit from the addition of a potential secondary superstar.
