Whether or not he plays another down of high school football in Texas, North Crowley (Fort Worth, TX) five-star cornerback John Meredith III knows he’ll be playing college football in his home state.

Meredith was recently ruled ineligible for his senior season on a 5-2 vote at an 11-6 district executive committee meeting after he transferred to North Crowley from Euless Trinity in January.

While he navigates that decision, one decision he’s navigated for well over a year now is where he’ll play his college ball. Ultimately it came down to Ohio State, Texas and Texas A&M with the Longhorns winning that battle on Friday, June 19.

He recently took official visits to both Texas and Texas A&M with the Longhorns hosting him on June 5 and the Aggies the weekend prior.

According to 247Sports, the 6-foot-2, 175-pounder is ranked as the No. 4 overall prospect in the 2027 class and the top defensive back in the cycle. The updated USA TODAY Sports composite football rankings for the 2027 class ranks Meredith as the No. 2 player in the country.

This year he was a participant in the 2026 Under Armour All-American Game where he registered a tackle and an interception.

Longhorns now have offensive, defensive centerpieces for 2027 class

Whether or not five-star wide receiver Easton Royal stays committed to Texas has been a question raging on the minds of many over the last few weeks as he recently took official visits to Florida and LSU.

Royal has been committed to Texas since last November and the Longhorns have been battling to keep his commitment. Meredith’s commitment could play a crucial role in doing just that.

Prior to Meredith’s commitment, Texas’ class was ranked by 247Sports as the No. 12 class in the 2027 cycle with 15 commitments. Of their 15 pledges, five rank as top 100 players for the cycle.
