5 Things Auburn Fans Learned About the SEC This Weekend

The Auburn Tigers picked up their first SEC win of the season under Alex Golesh against Vanderbilt on Saturday. 

But even though they moved to 3-1, it's not the only thing we learned about this conference. This weekend gave us plenty of marquee matchups inside the SEC and a bigger picture of what to expect for the rest of the year. 

The Florida Gators are for real. 

The SEC opening loss for the Auburn Tigers might be one of the most impressive losses in all of college football at the moment. Florida seems like they have figured it out very quickly under new head coach Jon Sumrall. Their offense is electric, led by star running back Jadan Bough, and is now ranked in the top 10, according to the AP Top 25 poll. 

Florida now has wins against Auburn and Ole Miss and looks like a true college football playoff contender. 

It's time to move on from Shane Beamer. 

On the flip side, South Carolina is a mess. 

And after their blowout loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide, it's time to take care of what is long overdue and move on from Shane Beamer as the Gamecocks' head coach. Beamer started his tenure at South Carolina with two winning seasons and is 35-32 across his six years running the program. However, since the beginning of 2025, he is 6-10 and 1-9 in SEC play.  

Kamario Taylor magic continues. 

It appears there is a fun quarterback story every year in the SEC. Last year, it was Ole Miss' Trinidad Chambliss, and this year it seems to be Mississippi State's Kamario Taylor. 

They picked up a top-25 win over Missouri this past weekend and look like a team that could potentially compete for the top of the SEC. The Auburn Tigers face Mississippi State later on this season in Starkville. 

The jury is still out on the Volunteers. 

College Game Day hosted an elite crowd from Knoxville this past weekend as the No. 1 team in the country, the Texas Longhorns, beat the Tennessee Volunteers 20-17 at Neyland Stadium. 

Tennessee kept the game within one possession, but mainly due to their defensive side of the ball. The Volunteers found ways to make the Texas offense, led by Arch Manning, struggle and keep themselves in the game. 

However, their offense isn't anything to write home about. Tennessee only picked up 221 total yards of offense and was sacked 10 times in the contest. The Auburn Tigers are set to travel to Tennessee this weekend for what should be a very emotional game against Alex Golesh's old team. 

What happened to John Mateer? 

Everything seems to be going in the wrong direction for a former Heisman Trophy candidate, John Mateer. The Sooners' quarterback has been looked at as one of the top five best quarterbacks entering the year, but has quickly fallen off to being one of the worst in the SEC. 

His magic seemed to fade out ever since moving to the SEC and injuring his thumb last year against the Auburn Tigers.
