5 things to know about Chip Lindsey, new Missouri football OC

Mizzou has made its move at offensive coordinator.

Missouri football officially announced that it has hired Chip Lindsey from Michigan as its next offensive playcaller. It was immediately unclear whether or not Lindsey will call plays in the Tigers’ Gator Bowl matchup against Virginia on Dec. 27 in Jacksonville, Florida.

Lindsey replaces three-year MU playcaller Kirby Moore, who recently was named the head coach at Washington State.

So, who is the new coach?

Here are five things to know about Missouri’s new offensive playcaller:

Where have new Missouri OC Chip Lindsey’s past offenses ranked?

Lindsey has been a coach since 1997 and has worked almost exclusively in college since 2010, when he made the move from the high school ranks to become Troy’s quarterbacks coach. He took his first offensive coordinating position in 2014 at Southern Miss under current Baltimore Ravens OC Todd Monken.

Lindsey has been an offensive playcaller or college head coach every season since then. Here’s where his units have ranked in the FBS for total offense:

  • 2014, Southern Miss: No. 100 (365.0 yards per game)
  • 2015, Southern Miss: No. 12 (509.5)
  • 2016, Arizona State: No. 81 (391.1)
  • 2017, Auburn: No. 26 (451.6)
  • 2018, Auburn: No. 78 (389.9)
  • 2019, Troy: No. 18 (458.4)
  • 2020, Troy: No. 66 (393.2)
  • 2021, Troy: No. 109 (339.9)
  • 2022, UCF: No. 16 (469.6)
  • 2023, North Carolina: No. 7 (491.2)
  • 2024, North Carolina: No. 48 (406.7)
  • 2025, Michigan: No. 57 (398.9)

Lindsey has head coaching experience

Lindsey was the head coach at Troy for three seasons from 2019-21.

In his first season at the helm, his team visited Faurot Field and lost 42-10 to the Barry Odom-coached Tigers. Lindsey also coached against Eli Drinkwitz’s Appalachian State team that year, falling 48-13 at home.

Lindsey was fired shortly before the end of the 2021 season with a 15-19 record at Troy.

History of sending QBs to the NFL

Lindsey has helped coach and develop at least three NFL players at the quarterback position.

Most recently, current New England Patriots starter Drake Maye spent a season under Lindsey before becoming the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Lindsey also had a hand in the development of Jarrett Stidham at Auburn, as he became a fourth-round pick, and Nick Mullens, who has now been in the league for nine seasons, at Southern Miss.

Lindsey was also Mullens’ high school coach at Spain Park High in Hoover, Alabama.

Mizzou is going to start true freshman and former four-star prospect Matt Zollers in the Gator Bowl. The Tigers will likely need to add a quarterback out of the transfer portal depth, but the option remains Mizzou to chase a player of starting caliber to compete with Zollers.

Missouri’s starting quarterback from 2025, Beau Pribula, has announced he will transfer out of the program.

Where is Chip Lindsey from?

Lindsey is from Madison, Alabama, and spent a majority of the years between 1997 and 2013 as a high school head coach in Alabama and Georgia.

He was a wide receiver for North Alabama from 1992-93 before transferring to Alabama as a student.

Lindsey was born in 1974 and is 51 years old.

Variety in systems, conferences

The most-obvious overlap between Lindsey and Drinkwitz is their connection to Guz Malzahn, both spending time on his staff early in their respective coaching careers.

Drinkwitz has previously said he wanted his new OC to revamp the Tigers’ passing game, but that the cornerstone of the Mizzou offense will be the outside zone run game that has worked well for the Tigers over the past handful of seasons.

But the Mizzou head coach also said he’s open to input and ideas from the new playcaller.

Lindsey has some variety on his résumé. Mack Brown at North Carolina and Monken at Southern Miss are both known for utilizing some air raid concepts. He’ll have worked with some spread option concepts at the likes of Arizona State and Michigan. The Wolverines, with true freshman star Bryce Underwood at QB this season, ran an RPO-heavy scheme.

His coordinating gigs have taken him across the Power-conferences, too. He has called plays in the SEC, Big Ten, ACC and the old Pac-12.
