The No. 5 Ohio State Buckeyes (4-1, 2-0) will welcome the reeling Maryland Terrapins (2-3, 0-2), who enter this game on a three-game losing streak. Here are 5 things to know about Maryland as you prepare for the game.

Quarterback Malik Washington is a rising star

Washington is connected to Ohio State and Michigan in more ways than just playing in the same conference. He was the No. 5-ranked quarterback in the 2025 recruiting class, the class that Bryce Underwood was No. 1 and Tavien St. Clair was No. 3 (Keelon Russell was No. 2).

Washington has struggled some this season, but threw for almost 3,000 yards and 17 touchdowns last season as a freshman. However, in his last two games, he has thrown six interceptions, including four in the 54-3 loss to UCLA. He has thrown for 1,288 yards, 7 touchdowns and 6 interceptions so far this season.

Head coach Mike Locksley’s seat is hotter than hot

Locksley came into the season on the hot seat, and the first five games of the season have made it much worse. It seemed to hit its worst spot after the Terrapins’ 54-3 loss to UCLA at home two weeks ago, and last week they lost to Nebraska 48-23 after the Cornhuskers scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter. It doesn’t seem that Locksley has a lot of time left in College Park.

Chris Durr Jr. is a problem for defenses

Durr came to Maryland from Wyoming this past season and has made his presence felt immediately. Durr is second in the conference with 42 catches and fifth in the conference with 461 yards receiving this season. He also has four touchdowns. He is the main offensive threat that the Ohio State defense has to worry about this week and can go off against anyone.

The Maryland defense gives up a lot of points

This is likely not new information, but with the Sayin-Smith connection as crisp as it’s ever been, this stat feels relevant. The Terrapin defense gives up the third-most points in the Big Ten, 30.2 per game. Only Purdue and Rutgers give up more points. Not to mention, the Terrapins’ top three defensive backs are all on the early injury report.

They are not good on third down

The Terrapins are in the middle of the road in the Big Ten standings in a lot of offensive categories. However, third-down conversions are not one of them. They are 17th out of 18 in third-down conversions, converting on 25-of-71 opportunities, which is 35.2%. The only team worse is Washington (which is surprising with Demond Williams), and Ohio State ranks No. 6 in the conference.
