5 things to know about Missouri football QB target Austin Simmons

If the early reports pan out, Missouri football has wasted no time honing in on its next transfer portal quarterback.

Several reports emerged Friday, Jan. 2 — the official opening date of the college football transfer portal — that Ole Miss backup quarterback Austin Simmons is entering the portal, and entering it with a destination already in mind.

Pete Thamel at ESPN first reported that Simmons was entering the transfer database with a no-contact tag, and Missouri was the favorite to land the lefty for the 2026 season.

Simmons is expected to finish the season with Ole Miss, which will play in the College Football Playoff semifinals against Miami this upcoming Thursday. After that, all early indications suggest he is Columbia-bound.

Before that action pans out, get to know the Tigers’ likely next QB transfer:

Missouri football QB target Austin Simmons was Ole Miss’ starter to begin 2025

Simmons was widely expected to be the Rebels’ starting quarterback in the 2025 season under former head coach Lane Kiffin, and that was his role with the team for the first two weeks of the season. But, one of the stories of the college football season emerged in his backup.

Simmons picked up an ankle injury in Ole Miss’ win over Kentucky in Week 2, which saw him limited in September. Trinidid Chambliss, who joined Mississippi from Division-II Ferris State, took over the starting gig.

Chambliss held on to the job and now has helped lead Ole Miss to the CFP semifinals. The D-II transfer has requested an eligibility waiver to play in 2026, which could have impacted Simmons’ path to starting reps next season.

If Missouri does go on to sign Simmons, it will have added the backup quarterback from a playoff team in back-to-back seasons. Beau Pribula, who will transfer out of MU this offseason, joined the Tigers from Penn State, which, like Ole Miss, made the final four last year.

Austin Simmons age, hometown

Simmons turned 20-years-old this past November but has been in college for three full seasons. That’s because he reclassified from the 2025 class to sign with the Rebels in the 2023 class.

He has earned his degree from Mississippi, meaning he is technically a grad transfer.

Simmons played in high school at Pahokee High IB World School and is from Moore Haven, Florida.

According to ESPN, Simmons was the No. 77 prospect in the Class of 2025 before he reclassified.

As a 2023 prospect, he was the No. 292-ranked player nationally and the No. 19 quarterback in 247Sports’ national composite rankings, which made him a four-star prospect.

He flipped his commitment from Florida to Ole Miss during his recruitment.

Simmons is a former baseball player

The 6-foot-4, 215-pound southpaw made 13 relief appearances on the mound for Ole Miss’ baseball team in the 2024 season.

He finished his lone college season playing baseball with a 2-0 record and a 3.21 ERA, giving up nine hits and five earned runs across 14 total innings of work.

Simmons did not play baseball in the 2025 season, opting to only focus on football. It’s highly unlikely that he would pitch for Mizzou’s baseball team, like current MU quarterback and Los Angeles Dodgers signee Sam Horn.

Austin Simmons’ college football stats

Simmons made two starts for Ole Miss over three seasons but has appeared in 17 total games.

He has completed 60% of his pass attempts (64-of-107) over his career for 1,026 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions.

In his two starts in 2025, which came against Georgia State and Kentucky, he went 33-of-55 (60%) for 288 yards per game, three touchdown passes and four interceptions.

In his career, Pro Football Focus charted him eight total Big Time Throws, which measures passes with ‘excellent ball location and timing,’ and five Turnover Worthy Plays, which measures passes that could have been intercepted and fumbles.

Simmons can use his legs to escape in a pinch but isn’t necessarily known as a runner. He has 25 rushing attempts in his career for 103 yards, one touchdown and three fumbles. The QB has recorded four-career runs of 10 or more yards.
