Texas A&M (11-1, 7-1 SEC) is headed to the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history, set to host Miami (FL) (10-2) on Saturday, December 20, as Aggie fans will get to experience their first CFP game inside a likely sold out Kyle Field for an early 11:00 a.m. kick off.

The Aggies have returned to practice, heading into next week’s game prep before facing the Hurricanes. At the same time, senior edge Cashius Howell has had quite the week, earning the program’s first SEC Defensive Player of the Year Award, and was a finalist for the Lombardi Award, losing out to Texas Tech linebacker Jacob Rodriguez.

Howell’s ascendance is only surprising to those outside of College Station, knowing that the work he put in this offseason with S&C Tommy Moffitt would always pay off. At the same time, head coach Mike Elko’s scheme utilized Howell’s elite athleticism.

However, Texas A&M’s 11-1 record was the product of a whole-team effort on both sides of the ball, and Dave Campbell’s Texas Football recently recognized seven players, including Mike Elko, on its All-Texas first- and second-team lists.

1st Team

  • Linebacker — Taurean York
  • Edge — Cashius Howell
  • OL — Trey Zuhn III
  • WR — KC Concepcion

2nd Team

  • QB — Marcel Reed
  • OL — Ar’maj Reed-Adams
  • DL — Albert Regis

Mike Elko was also named Co-Coach of the Year. None of these selections is surprising, as Taurean York led the team in tackles (67), Trey Zuhn allowed just one sack, and finished with the highest PFF passing grade. In contrast, KC Concepcion, now the newest Paul Hornung Award winner, finished with a team-high 886 receiving yards, nine touchdowns, and two punt return touchdowns.

Starting quarterback Marcel Reed, who was left off all the All-SEC teams, finished with a career-high 2,932 passing yards and 25 touchdowns, and was a Heisman candidate for most of the regular season. Starting right guard Ar’maj Reed-Adams lived up to his preseason expectations as an elite run blocker, and senior defensive lineman Albert Regis was by far the Aggies’ top run defender, finishing with 43 tackles and two sacks.
