8 top recruits to watch in college football for 2026

Every college football season brings a new group of freshmen with huge expectations. Most spend time learning before earning regular snaps. A few, however, arrive with the size, talent and experience to compete from day one. The 2026 recruiting class has several players who fit that description.

This year’s class features top quarterbacks, offensive tackles and edge rushers who were among the highest-rated recruits in the country. Many were five-star prospects, and some also entered college with impressive NIL valuations. More importantly, they have joined programs where their skills fit well with the team’s system.

Some of these freshmen could win starting jobs during training camp, while others may become important contributors as the season goes on. No matter what role they begin with, they have the talent to make an impact early.

Here are the eight top recruits to watch in college football for the 2026 season.

8. Kelvin Obot, OT, Utah

Kelvin Obot arrives at Utah as one of the best offensive line recruits in the 2026 class. The 6-foot-5, 295-pound offensive tackle starred at Fruitland High School in Idaho and is a highly regarded four-star prospect. According to 247Sports, he is ranked as the No. 7 offensive tackle and the No. 41 overall player in the country.

Utah has always been known for its physical style of play, and Obot is a great fit for that approach. He is a strong blocker who plays with toughness and keeps working until the whistle. With his size, strength and physical playing style, he has a good chance to earn playing time early in his college career.

7. Zion Elee, EDGE, Maryland

Zion Elee is one of the biggest recruits in Maryland history. The five-star EDGE stayed home after starring at St. Frances Academy in Baltimore and is ranked as the No. 2 overall player in the 2026 class by On3.

At around 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds with 35.5-inch arms, Elee combines elite length with outstanding athleticism and speed. He recorded 28 tackles for loss and 10 sacks against top competition during his junior season. His explosive first step and ability to pressure quarterbacks make him the top EDGE prospect in the class and a player who could make an immediate impact for Maryland.

6. Keisean Henderson, QB, Houston

Keisean Henderson chose to stay in his hometown by committing to Houston, giving the Cougars one of the best recruiting additions in school history. The five-star quarterback from Legacy School of Sports Sciences is ranked No. 1 overall recruit by 247Sports and enters college with a reported NIL valuation of around $750,000.

Henderson is one of the most exciting dual-threat quarterbacks in the class. He can make plays with both his arm and his legs, escapes pressure well, and is dangerous outside the pocket. Houston’s offense should allow him to use those strengths early as he begins his college career. Senior Conner Weigman is set to be the starter behind center, but Houston head coach Willie Fritz indicated Henderson will definitely see the field as a freshman.

5. Carter Meadows, EDGE, Michigan

Michigan landed one of the top defensive linemen in the 2026 class by signing five-star EDGE Carter Meadows from Gonzaga High School in Washington, D.C. Standing 6-foot-6.5 with 35-inch arms and a reported NIL valuation of $500,000, Meadows has the size and athleticism that NFL scouts look for.

Despite his height, he moves well, changes direction fast and knows how to get after the quarterback. Michigan has a strong history of developing defensive linemen, and Meadows has the talent to become the next star in that group.

4. Dia Bell, QB, Texas

Dia Bell arrives at Texas after an outstanding high school career at American Heritage High School in Florida. Before his senior season, he won Elite 11 MVP, one of the biggest honors for high school quarterbacks. During the 2024 season, he completed 70.6% of his passes for 2,597 yards and 29 touchdowns while rushing for 561 yards and five scores. Injuries limited him to two games in 2025.

Bell is known for his accuracy, quick decision-making and ability to make plays with his legs. He also has the physical tools needed to succeed at the next level. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian has a strong history of developing quarterbacks, and Bell looks like a great fit for the Longhorns’ offense.

The Longhorns have national-title hopes in 2026, so Bell and another touted freshman quarterback, KJ Lacey, may use the season as a learning experience behind Heisman Trophy candidate Arch Manning.

3. Jackson Cantwell, OT, Miami

Jackson Cantwell gives Miami one of the most talented offensive linemen in the 2026 class. The five-star recruit from Missouri stands 6-foot-7.5 and weighs 325 pounds, making him one of the biggest players in the class. On3 ranks him No. 1 overall, and his reported NIL valuation of $2.5 million is the highest among 2026 recruits.

Cantwell combines impressive size with quick feet and solid pass-blocking skills. He plays with good balance and has the strength to handle powerful defenders. Miami wants to build an explosive offense, and having a tackle with his talent could help protect the quarterback for years to come.

2. Jared Curtis, QB, Vanderbilt

Jared Curtis is one of the biggest recruiting commitments Vanderbilt has ever landed. The five-star quarterback from Nashville Christian School is ranked as the No. 2 quarterback in the class by On3 and brings huge expectations to the program. He also enters college with a reported NIL valuation of around $2 million.

Curtis has the size, arm strength and overall talent to compete in the SEC and replace Diego Pavia, who finished second in the Heisman voting last year after leading the Commodores to a 10-3 season. Vanderbilt rarely signs players ranked this highly, making his commitment a major step forward for the program. If he develops as expected, he could help change the future of Vanderbilt football. Head coach Clark Lea has not yet named Curtis the starter. He is competing with senior Blaze Berlowitz for the position.

1. Luke Wafle, EDGE, USC

Luke Wafle joins USC as the No. 1 overall player in the 2026 class, according to On3. The five-star EDGE from the Hun School in New Jersey stands 6-foot-5.5, weighs 255 pounds and has a reported NIL valuation of $800,000. He has the size, strength and athleticism to compete early in his college career.

USC needed more talent on its defensive line, and Wafle has the potential to fill that role. He has a quick first step, regularly puts pressure on quarterbacks and plays with plenty of power. The Trojans believe he can make an immediate impact and become a crucial part of their defense.
