Auburn WR Malcolm Simmons picks Texas Tech football in transfer portal

The Texas Tech football team didn't get the most highly publicized Auburn wide receiver in the NCAA transfer portal this go-round. The Red Raiders did wind up with one of the Tigers' better pass catchers, though.

Malcolm Simmons, who caught 65 passes the past two season for Auburn, has committed to Texas Tech. ESPN and On3 reported his pledge on Monday, Jan. 12, citing information from Simmons' agency.

Simmons caught 40 passes for 451 yards and 3 touchdowns as a true freshman in 2024 and caught 25 passes for 457 yards and 3 TDs in 2025. He played in every game both seasons, making six starts his freshman year and three starts his sophomore year. Auburn listed him this year as 6-foot and 186 pounds, and he was on the depth chart as an H inside receiver.

On Sunday, former Auburn receiver Cam Coleman chose Texas over Texas Tech, Texas A&M and Alabama. Coleman was one of the highest-rated players with his name in the portal.

Auburn went 5-7 both seasons and fired coach Hugh Freeze in early November. Coleman and Simmons were the among the Tigers who decided not to stay and play for new coach Alex Golesh.

Simmons was arrested in July 2025 on an accusation of domestic assault with strangulation or suffocation. According to published reports, Auburn campus administrators cleared Simmons in late July to participate in team activities and the case was dismissed in August by the Lee County Circuit Court.

What Auburn transfer wide receiver Malcolm Simmons brings to Texas Tech football

Simmons can fill an immediate need. Tech is losing two of its three starting receivers with Reggie Virgil and Caleb Douglas exhausting their eligibility. Coy Eakin, the lone returning starter, caught 48 passes for 637 yards and 6 touchdowns this season.

Not counting tight end and running back, Tech's next most production came from Micah Hudson, who had 8 catches for 112 yards and 2 TDs.

Catching 40 passes as a true freshman in the Southeastern Conference attests to Simmons' talent level, and his first two 100-yard games in college were the last two he played: 5 catches, 149 yards and a TD on Nov. 22 against Mercer and 3 catches, 143 yards and a TD on Nov. 29 against Alabama.

Coming out of Alexander City (Ala.) Russell in 2024, Simmons was rated 230th nationally and 13th in his state among top prospects on the 247Sports composite index.

Over his two seasons with the Tigers, Simmons also returned 20 punts for a 5.1-yard average, including one for a touchdown in 2024.
