Former Michigan safety TJ Metcalf commits Tennessee

We knew Jim Knowles valued his safeties and he’s certainly backed that up over the last week. Tennessee added its third safety of the portal cycle early on Tuesday morning, getting a signature from TJ Metcalf.

Metcalf’s commitment would explain Kaleb Beasley’s transfer portal late on Monday night.

Metcalf, an honorable mention All-Big-Ten performer this season, finished the year with 58 tackles and an interception. The 6-1, 200 pound defensive back handled over 700 snaps in 2025 for the Wolverines, working multiple spots in the secondary.

The former 3-star prospect began his career at Arkansas where he spent the 2023 and 2024 seasons. Metcalf had three interceptions during his time in Fayetteville. He will have one season of eligibility remaining.

Knowles has now added Metcalf, along with Kansas State safety Qua Moss and Penn State safety Dejaun Lane to the safety room. They join Edrees Farooq, creating a clear top four that Knowles will use all over the field. Auburn cornerback Kayin Lee will slide into a starting role opposite of Ty Redmond. Chaz Coleman, Amare Campbell and Xavier Gilliam all come over from Penn State and bring familiarity with Knowles’ system.

The defense is shaping up nicely on paper. Expect Tennessee to add another contributor or two along the defensive front to close things out.

As for the quarterback spot? It’s anyone’s guess at this point.
