Is Rodney Fields Creating Separation In Kansas State Wildcats Backfield?

Kansas State Wildcats running back Rodney Fields is starting to make a case to remain the No. 1 running back.
He had his second straight game with at least 100 yards in Saturday's 34-7 victory against the Washington State Cougars. Fields finished with 105 yards on 13 carries and touchdown, an electrifying 75-yard run. The previous week he had 101 rushing yards and a score against the Nicholls Cowboys in the season opener at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.
If Fields remains the starter, it will mark the second straight season the Wildcats made a switch at running back. Senior Joe Jackson was considered the incumbent during training camp before first-year coach Collin Klein made the surprise switch before the opener.
Last year former Wildcats player Dylan Edwards was considered the starter but was eventually beaten out by Jackson, who ran for more than 900 yards on the way to earning honorable mention All-Big 12 honors.
Klein has said he's liked what he's seen from all three running backs, including Oregon Ducks transfer Jay Harris. With Klein's mentality of keeping all positions an open competition throughout the season, a chance could always be made.
For now, it just seems Fields has earned the most respect from Klein. He is the team's leader in carries and that should continue with the tougher portion of the schedule beginning next week against the Tulane Green Wave and then Big 12 opener versus the Cincinnati Bearcats.
WILDCATS HOST TOP QB RECRUIT
Titus Huard, who is rated the 11th-best quarterback in the country, was among the recruits to attend Saturday's game. He is also the son of former NFL Brock Huard, whose professional career spanned from 1999-2004 with the Indianapolis Colts and Seattle Seahawks.
The younger Huard, who plays at Valor (Colo.) Christian, is a member of the 2028 recruiting class. He already has offers from the Arkansas Razorbacks, Arizona State Wildcats, Kansas Jayhawks and Colorado Buffaloes.
Huard has thrown for 784 yards and seven touchdowns this season. Last year he threw for 1,946 yards and 16 touchdowns. Aside from his lineage, scouts love his size. He is 6-foot-5 and 206 pounds.
