Arguably, no team in the country finds hidden gems who are underrecruited like the Iowa Hawkeyes. Year in and year out, they find players who blossom into stars that were overlooked by other schools. This season, they stumbled into yet another success story who began his career with the Hawkeyes as a walk-on.
Tight end DJ Vonnahme, out of Breda, Iowa, got his opportunity this season on offense due to some unfortunate injuries that plagued the tight end room. He didn’t just fill in; he took the chance and ran with it, producing every chance he got.
Along with being named to the AP All-Bowl Team, DJ Vonnahme has now earned honors as an FWAA Freshman All-American for his production during the 2025 season.

During his 2025 campaign, Vonnahme, who stands at a large 6-foot-4 and weighs 240 pounds, showed off his route-running ability and trusty hands, leading Iowa with 29 catches for 434 yards and three scores.
He put a gigantic exclamation point on not just his season, but Iowa’s as well, being the go-to guy in the Hawkeyes’ 34-27 ReliaQuest Bowl win over Vanderbilt, which saw Vonnahme post a stat-line of seven receptions for 146 yards and a touchdown.
