Over the past few years, safety has been a significant position of strength for the Oregon Ducks. The trend appears as if it’ll continue, with Minnesota star transfer Koi Perich, 2025 four-star Trey McNutt and 2026 five-star Jett Washington all being on the roster next season. Aaron Flowers, who impressed alongside Dillon Thieneman at safety last season, is also returning for his redshirt sophomore season and will look to hold down a starting spot.

It all leads to the conclusion that the Ducks are set in the near future at the safety position — but that’s not stopping head coach Dan Lanning and his staff from pursuing talented safety recruits.

Class of 2027 four-star safety Semaj Stanford has picked up over 30 offers but narrowed down his list to 12 schools that he’ll be diving into. Of those schools, Oregon, Georgia, Texas, Nebraska, Ohio State and LSU have emerged as the leaders.

Stanford is set to visit to Eugene for the first time on Jan. 24.

Speaking on his upcoming visit to Oregon, the 5-foot-11, 180-pounder expressed wanting to get the full scope of the program.

“I want to see how it goes, learn more about the defense and talk to some players,” he said. “Coach Lanning is a great coach, a defensive head coach, and Coach Hampton getting promoted stood out. They’ve been to see me and they’ve been on me hard.”

The attention is certainly worth the time and effort Lanning and Hampton, as Stanford is a four-star and the No. 6 safety and No. 84 player overall in the 2027 class, per 247 Sports. He is also the No. 4 prospect in Oklahoma, as he competes for Broken Arrow High School.

Though the safety position is currently loaded for the Ducks, a lot can happen before Stanford were to step on campus in 2027.

Securing his commitment would be a huge win for Lanning and especially Hampton, who’s operating in his first offseason as the Ducks’ defensive coordinator.
