Ole Miss Secures Former Cal LB Luke Ferrelli After Flipping from Clemson

The Pete Golding era in Oxford, Miss., began on a high note. Golding started the season as the defensive coordinator for the Ole Miss Rebels. He later transitioned to the role of full-time head coach when Lane Kiffin departed to become the head coach of the LSU Tigers following the conclusion of the regular season.

Golding was assigned to lead the Rebels during their inaugural College Football Playoff run. Under his leadership, the team secured victories against the Tulane Green Wave and the Georgia Bulldogs before narrowly losing to the Miami Hurricanes in the semifinals.

He is working to assemble a roster that will demonstrate the success of the 2025 season was not a fluke. However, he has faced significant setbacks on defense, most notably with leading tackler TJ Dottery entering the transfer portal. Fortunately, it seems he has found a replacement in former California Golden Bears linebacker Luke Ferrelli.

Ferrelli finished his freshman season with 91 tackles, five tackles for loss and an interception. After the season, he decided to enter the transfer portal and initially transferred to the Clemson Tigers. However, he later changed his commitment to Ole Miss, marking a significant win for Golding.

The immediate ripple effects are encouraging for Ole Miss as it reshapes its defensive core. Losing Dottery initially appeared to be a major blow, but Ferrelli’s arrival helps stabilize the middle of the defense and eases concerns among fans and analysts. Around the SEC, the move has been viewed as a strong response from Golding, signaling that Ole Miss intends to remain competitive at the highest level.
