Rush Propst may not coach high school football season in 2026

Dec 5, 2025; Birmingham, AL, USA; Coosa Christian's Mac Long (3) talks with Coosa Christian head coach Rush Propst on the sidelines during the game with Lanett at Protective Life Stadium in the AHSAA 2A State Championship game.

Rush Propst may not coach high school football in 2026 and believe it or not, he says it’s on his own terms of why possibly may not.

According to a AL.com report, one of high school football’s most polarizing figures told the outlet that he’s had overtures from schools in Georgia but turned them down for one reason or another and could end up deciding to sit out coaching this upcoming 2026 season.

“I’ve been sort of picky, and there are a lot of reasons for it,” Propst said to AL.com at this past Tuesday’s Alabama Sports Writers Association Player of the Year Banquet. “I’ve started a business, so I want to see that through, and I think it’s got a chance. I’ve turned down several jobs in Georgia or basically not pursued them hard. I didn’t want to leave the state of Alabama because of this business, and there are some other reasons, too.”

It would be a U-turn from Propst’s standpoint he had back in December after nabbing a sixth state championship in the state of Alabama. Rivals had caught up with Propst after the Alabama Class 2A title victory back on Dec. 6 and the legendary high school football head coach made it very clear then that he wasn’t done putting on the headset and holding the play sheet just yet.

“I’m not done with coaching,” Propst said to Rivals. “I want to coach. Coosa (Christian) just has to make their mind up on what they want to do. If they want to bring the other guy back, I’m okay either way. I’m gonna coach, whether it’s at Coosa or somewhere else. I’m open for business. I want to finish my career in the right way. I think whether that’s in Georgia or Alabama, it doesn’t matter. I want to coach about another six or seven years.”

Propst is coming off a 2025 season where he led Coosa Christian School to the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Class 2A state championship and is no stranger to hoisting trophies. The five other times in his high school coaching career Propst had the pleasure of hoisting the AHSAA state title trophy, with all of those being when he starred as the head coach at Hoover (Ala.).

Perhaps best known for his run at Hoover where he won five state titles from 1999-2007, Propst owns a 308-119 overall record all-time as a high school head football coach with eight state championships (5 at Hoover, 2 at Colquitt County, 1 at Coosa Christian School).
