Oklahoma Sooners zeroing in on 2027 QB prospect

The Oklahoma Sooners have seemingly zeroed in on a quarterback prospect they really like in the 2027 recruiting class. According to a report from OUInsider and On3’s Parker Thune, the Sooners have been pursuing three-star QB prospect Jamison Roberts heavily, and will continue to do so.

Roberts hails from Saraland High School in Alabama, and he stands at 6-foot-3 and weighs 190 pounds. He is On3’s No. 52 quarterback currently in the ’27 class, and the No. 22 player in Alabama in their rankings.

According to Thune, the Sooners have been making sure that Roberts feels the love. Offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Ben Arbuckle visited him this past week, and head coach Brent Venables is set to visit him next week. Roberts has already been to Oklahoma, but he is expecting to make a return trip as well.

Roberts is one of just four quarterbacks that the Sooners have offered in the 2027 class. Four-star Nebraska commit Trae Taylor received an offer from OU back in June of 2024, when Seth Littrell was still the OC/QB coach in Norman. Taylor has been committed to the Cornhuskers since May of 2025, and Arbuckle hasn’t pursued Taylor much since taking command of OU’s offense.

Oklahoma has also offered Jonathan Moore, who plays quarterback, but many schools see him as a defensive back at the next level. Moore’s offer from the Sooners came back in March of 2025. His only other offers are currently from Kent State and Sacramento State, so he doesn’t project as OU’s quarterback of the future, even if he ends up in Norman. Moore is uncommitted, unrated, and unranked, and some sites have him listed as an athlete instead of as a quarterback. He’d likely play the safety position if he winds up with the Sooners.

For a long time, the Sooners made four-star prospect Peyton Houston their top QB priority in the class, with Littrell giving him an offer way back in June of 2024. Unlike with Taylor, the Sooners continued to pursue Houston after Arbuckle replaced Littrell. Arbuckle made Houston his top priority, but Houston picked LSU over Oklahoma, committing in September of 2025. Even with a new coaching staff taking over in Baton Rouge since then, Houston remains committed to the Tigers. With early signing day 10-plus months away, maybe the Sooners can make a flip, but it seems more likely at this point that they’ve moved on to pursuing other players, primarily Roberts.

Oklahoma has also shown some interest in Dane Weber, an uncommitted four-star prospect in the class. Weber was on hand for a visit when the Sooners beat Missouri in November, but he has not yet landed an offer from OU. At this time, it seems that Arbuckle has made Roberts his primary QB target in the ’27 class, with the Sooners currently standing as the favorites to land Roberts’ services.

OU’s quarterback room currently consists of returners John Mateer, Whitt Newbauer, and Jett Niu, along with incoming true freshman Bowe Bentley, who signed with the Sooners in the 2026 recruiting class. The only player exiting the QB room from the 2025 roster is second-string quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr., who entered the transfer portal and signed with West Virginia.

There’s a long way to go in Roberts’ recruitment, but it appears that the Sooners have positioned themselves well to land a player that Arbuckle really likes and wants to make a priority.

Oklahoma has already made their first QB offer in the 2028 class, in three-star prospect Graham Simpson. The Sooners have yet to offer a quarterback in the 2029 or 2030 classes.
