Drinkwitz and the Tigers may have found their guy.
Mizzou Football landed Ole Miss starting wide receiver Cayden Lee from the transfer portal, joining former teammates quarterback Austin Simmons and cornerback Chris Graves Jr. in the move from Oxford, Mississippi, to Columbia, Missouri.
The news was announced on Saturday afternoon but its been expected for some time now with numerous hints coming from Simmons. First, he posted a photo celebrating with Cayden Lee on his instagram story, then, he posted a box of Honey-Combs from the grocery store. “Honeycomb” is Lee’s nickname. Mizzou fans picked up on this and were just waiting for the news to drop.
This is a massive addition for the Tigers who will be without a bulk of their receiving room from last year. Kevin Coleman Jr. is out of eligibility while Joshua Manning and Marquis Johnson have already found new homes in the portal. The former will be headed to Kansas State while the latter is packing his bags for Mississippi State. Lee becomes the fifth receiver that Missouri has secured in the portal this offseason joining Cincinnati’s Caleb Goodie, Auburn’s Horatio Fields, Florida’s Naeshaun Montgomery and Minnesota’s Kenric Lanier II.
The Kennesaw, Georgia, native was a three star product out of high school selecting Ole Miss over schools like UCF and Auburn. As a freshman in 2023, Lee played in 10 games and made one start to close the season against Penn State in the Peach Bowl. With Jaxson Dart under center, Lee finished his first collegiate season with five receptions for 114 yards and two touchdowns.
Following his freshman season, Lee had a breakout sophomore year appearing in all 13 games for the Rebels and starting in 12. He was the second most productive receiver during Dart’s impressive senior season. Lee finished with 57 receptions, 874 yards and two touchdowns.
Lee stayed productive during his junior season starting all 15 games at wide receiver for Ole Miss. He registerred 44 catches, 635 yards and three touchdowns during the Rebels’ historic season. Lee was on the Biletnikoff Award preseason watch list and the preseason All-SEC third team for various outlets.
Lee was rumored to be between staying at Ole Miss — pending Trinidad Chambliss’ eligibility situation — or joining Austin Simmons, one of his best friend from his past few seasons. It’s safe to say Mizzou fans are happy he went with the second option.
This was likely the final receiver addition this offseason for Drinkwitz and new DC Chip Lindsey. The Tigers have solidified themselves as a top 25 portal class this offseason.
