When it was announced that elite 2027 McKeesport (Pa.) High School running back Kemon Spell had committed to the Georgia Bulldogs, most Notre Dame fans wondered where the Fighting Irish staff would go from there. Spell was a priority target for head coach Marcus Freeman and the staff for 2027, and now they would have to pivot for running backs coach Ja’Juan Seider to find their next star runner. The Irish staff has luckily created a talented board at running back with several interesting players to know.

One of the key targets to know for the Fighting Irish is four-star Duncan (S.C.) Byrnes running back David Segarra III. Even before Spell was off the board, the South Carolina native was a player that the Notre Dame staff had been very high on, including visiting him at his high school recently. With the board a little bit smaller, it is important for the Irish to move quickly on Segarra. Getting him to take his first visit to South Bend was of the highest priority.

I have confirmed that the South Carolina star has indeed set his first trip to check out Notre Dame. He will be making it to campus for the March 21st weekend. That will offer Notre Dame an opportunity to impress Segarra. It could end up being a make-or-break visit depending on how it goes, especially with so many other schools pushing for him.

David Segarra’s recruiting background

Outside of Rivals, who has Segarra rated as a three-star player currently, the South Carolina native is pegged as a four-star by the other two major platforms. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Segarra is currently rated as the No. 244 overall player, the No. 18 running back, and the No. 4 player from the state of South Carolina for the 2027 recruiting class.

While Segarra’s recruiting rankings are a bit all over the place, he has been in heavy demand by some of the top programs in all of college football. Some of the top offers for the South Carolina star include the Fighting Irish, Georgia, Michigan, Tennessee, Florida, Texas A&M, Miami, Clemson, Indiana, Florida State, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, Maryland, Boston College, UCF, and Stanford, among others.

As a junior this past season, Segarra put together a tremendous season for Byrnes. In 11 games played, the 5-10, 200-pound runner managed to rush for 1,460 yards and 17 touchdowns, while averaging 8.4 yards per carry. Segarra also hauled in 19 receptions for 198 yards and four more scores. The South Carolina standout is an impressive combination of explosiveness and vision.
