North Carolina opens the 2026 season after finishing a disappointing 4-8 in 2025. The Tar Heels ended last season with a 42-19 loss to NC State, producing 265 total yards and only 70 on the ground. One returning player to watch is wide receiver Jordan Shipp, who had eight catches for a career-high 90 yards and a touchdown in the finale. Shipp finished the season as one of UNC’s main targets and is back on the 2026 roster. North Carolina will also be looking for a better result against TCU after losing 48-14 to the Horned Frogs in last season’s opener.
TCU comes in with confidence after going 9-4 last season and closing the year with three straight wins. The Horned Frogs beat No. 16 USC 30-27 in overtime in the Alamo Bowl, with returning running back Jeremy Payne playing a major role. Payne rushed 13 times for 73 yards and a touchdown, caught six passes for 50 yards and scored the winning 35-yard touchdown in overtime. TCU also brings back receiver Jordan Dwyer, who had 621 receiving yards and four touchdowns through the first 10 games of 2025 and had nine catches for 136 yards and a score against North Carolina in last year’s meeting.
