Not everyone thinks Ohio State deserves to be the No. 1 team in college football. Ole Miss football coach Lane Kiffin believes that honor belongs in the SEC.
At a press conference on Nov. 10, a reporter asked Kiffin if he was encouraged by the first wave of rankings by the CFP committee, including Ole Miss receiving the No. 6 spot and the top SEC team, Texas A&M, ranked at No. 3 behind Indiana and Ohio State.
“Texas A&M being No. 3. Well, what more do you want them to do?” Kiffin said.
Kiffin questioned how much metrics and strength of schedule get factored into the rankings, mentioning the Aggies’ win over Notre Dame on Sept. 13.
“What if they didn’t play Notre Dame?” Kiffin said. “They just played whoever, and just had an easy win, they’d be ranked in the same spot, so what good did that do if that’s not rewarded? They have the highest metrics of anybody, and they are not No. 1.”

The coach then proposed his own method of comparing the Aggies to Indiana, which received the No. 2 ranking behind Ohio State and one spot ahead of Texas A&M.
“Put them on a neutral site, ask Vegas what’s the spread. … That to me shows more than people sitting around a room just guessing.”
Ohio State received the No. 1 rankings for a second week in a row in the CFP committee rankings on Nov. 11, followed by Indiana and Texas A&M. The top-three rankings are the same in the US LBM Coaches poll and AP poll.
