A sudden change of plans ended up being a big win for Notre Dame, who hosted one of the nation's best edge players this weekend. Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook star edge Darieon Prescott made a very important visit to the Notre Dame campus this weekend as the Irish staff continue to try to court him into their 2028 class.
Prescott was originally slated to spend two days in College Station visiting Texas A&M, and then making his way over to Nebraska as part of a busy weekend. Initially, Prescott wasn't set to return to Notre Dame until the end of April, but that just wasn't going to work for him, or for the Irish coaching staff.
"I had to get back there earlier," Prescott told Irish Breakdown. "I had to change my schedule. wanted to see the Irish practice, see the culture and revisit with the coaches and staff. The love at Notre Dame is different and they kept trying to get me down there sooner, and I wanted to come."
Prescott got a chance to see Notre Dame practice, and getting a chance to know the remade defensive staff was a much-needed opportunity for him. Safe to say, his expectations on the visit were not only met, but exceeded in so many ways during the weekend.
"It was an amazing visit," Prescott exclaimed. "The people are truly amazing in the program and outside of football as well. It's somewhere I see myself.
"The practice was great," continued Prescott. "The coaching and high intensity really stood out to me, but they were still having fun while doing so. I like the way Coach P (Charlie Partridge) was coaching the edges during practice, and when we were in the meetings before practice. He knows what he's doing."
After the practice, the 6-6, 220-pound end had some private time with Partridge, the first-year defensive line coach. The conversation was a genuine one that reminded him why he had to change his schedule to have this moment to continue building the relationship.
"Building with Coach P was a main reason I changed things," Prescott explained. "I was blessed enough to get to chat with Coach (Marcus) Freeman and Coach P, and both conversations were amazing. Coach P truly knew what he was talking about at the edge position. He gives a great perspective on football and everything, and that's the type of coach I want to be around. He's just an overall great guy to talk to.
Then, Prescott and his father spent valuable time with head coach Marcus Freeman. It was a vitally important bonding time. Previous visits to South Bend gave them a great respect for his leadership and coaching, but this weekend's conversation revealed something that's even more valuable in his recruitment.
"He's someone I truly respect in football," Prescott explained. "He's a great coach and outside of football, he's a great father. He knows what it takes to make it, and he's a great example to his players. He holds his players to a high standard, but he's just like them, because he holds himself to a standard too. He helped us understand everything about Notre Dame football."
The visit went so well for Prescott that he's already thinking about possibly getting back to South Bend for one more visit this spring, and possibly this summer. The Irish were considered a top school for him heading into the visit, and even though it's early in the sophomore's process, they sit very high on his list.
"It's a great place," Prescott stated. "It's the love they show me and the people that make it great. I'm in my early recruiting process, but Notre Dame has always been a high contender for me. I might come back again for Blue & Gold (Game), since that was the original plan, and maybe this summer too."
He ranks as the 17th best player and third best edge in the country according to On3. He's also ranked as the top player in the state of Illinois. As a sophomore, Prescott recorded 65 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 5 sacks, 8 pass break ups and 25 quarterback pressures. He also blocked two kicks, forced three fumbles and recovered two more.
Prescott already has an elite offer list that includes Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, LSU, Indiana, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Florida State, Penn State and Nebraska among many, many others.
