ESPN makes controversial score ticker decision ahead of college football season

When you watch a college football game this season on ESPN and its family of networks, the product will look different. Drastically different, for better or worse.

According to Front Office Sports, ESPN is getting rid of its BottomLine ticker during college football games, the network confirmed to Front Office Sports.

“We’re always looking for ways to better serve sports fans. By removing the BottomLine during live action, we’re creating a cleaner presentation that keeps the focus where it belongs—on the field,” an ESPN spokesperson confirmed to FOS.

Honestly, I’m okay with this. Last year, FOX got rid of their score ticker for their NFL broadcasts, and it actually made watching the games better. CBS also shifted to a small score ticker in the upper-left corner of their NFL broadcasts, and they, too, have a better product because of this. When watching a game, the focus was on that game. That’s how it should be. If fans want to know the scores of other games, check your phones.

For those with YouTube TV, there is still the multi-view option where you can have four games on at once. In addition, it also has a built-in score ticker that can be added to the screen in a side panel.
