Last season, the Miami Hurricanes showed exactly what a suffocating pass rush can do. They made the CFP title game and dominated Ohio State along the way to the championship finale. Rueben Bain and Akheem Mesidor will be hard to replicate; they don’t grow on trees. The USC Trojans are hoping they struck gold with their new future pass rush pairing.
The Trojans have hit it out of the park with recruiting, especially on the defensive side of the ball. This past recruiting class, which was No. 1 in the country, featured the No. 1 recruit in the nation, Luke Wafle. So far, he has been on a tear in camp, creating buzz that he will dominate even as a freshman.
The Trojans followed that up by adding elite four-star EDGE Mekai Brown. Brown chose USC over Ohio State, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, and Ole Miss. It is clear he had great intentions of lining up next to Wafle for a couple of seasons. The 6-foot-6 pass rusher has basketball athleticism and football physicality. Just like Luke Wafle, he physically overpowers his matchups. Brown finished his junior season with double-digit sacks and 68 tackles. He is in store for a big senior season this year, as his development continues.
In the Big Ten, defense matters just as much as anything, and USC is finally prioritizing that in its recruiting. The Trojans could have two studs coming off the edge very soon, wreaking havoc on opponents and helping propel them to dominance in the Big Ten. The best is yet to come for USC, and excitement should be at an all-time high with this potential premier pass rush duo.
