The Big Ten-vs.-SEC debate as the best conference in college football doesn’t appear to be going away anytime soon. And fans of the former have another talking point at their disposal with the completion of 2026 NFL Draft.
While the Big Ten has won the last three national championships, the SEC had dominated the first round of the NFL draft, leading in total first-round picks in 14 of the last 15 drafts, including in 2025. The SEC set an NFL record with 15 first-round picks in 2025, surpassing a record the conference previously set in 2020.
The Big Ten took the cake in 2026, though, leading the way with 10 first-round picks, more than all conferences. It also produced the No. 1 overall pick in Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza, the 2025 Heisman Trophy winner.
Regardless, the argument is likely never going to end, even though the SEC didn’t lead all conferences in first-round picks for the first time since 2015.
Here’s a breakdown of the 2026 NFL Draft first round by conference:

Which team had most first-round picks in 2026 NFL Draft?
Ohio State led all teams with four draft picks in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, all of which were in the top 11 picks.
Receiver Carnell Tate went No. 4 to the Titans, linebackers Arvell Reese and Sonny Styles went No. 5 to the Giants and No. 7 to the Commanders, respectively, and safety Caleb Downs went No. 11 to the Cowboys. Ohio State was looking to become the second team to ever produce four top-10 picks in the same draft, with Michigan State in 1967 being the only team to do so.
Miami, who defeated Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl, produced three players in offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa (No. 10 to the Giants) and defensive ends Rueben Bain Jr. (No. 15 to the Buccaneers) and Akheem Mesidor (No. 22 to the Chargers).
Alabama, Utah, Indiana, Oregon, Clemson, Notre Dame and Arizona State all had two players selected each.
